Courage to Change
Courage to Change

“In Balfour, where he landed early in the morning, he almost lost courage when he found out that nobody understood him. But at the hardware store a man- the same who had made him a present of the cap he was wearing-had made signs to him as if pitching sheaves, meanwhile talking to him, tentatively , in short monosyllables, apparently asking questions./ he thought that now he looked exactly like a Canadian.” (Frederick Philip Grove 21-22).

Many people immigrate to other countries because they want a better life and future. However, it's often not an easy transition. Immigrants have to deal with problems such as the language barrier, discrimination, and alienation. In the story” The First Day of an Immigrant”, by Frederick Philip Grove, one of the characters named Niels Lindstedt, is an immigrant of Canada and faced similar problems when he moved. However, he was successful in overcoming the challenges of immigration because of his courage. This story demonstrates that immigrants cannot be afraid to work hard, make changes to fit in, and to seek help from others in order to be accepted into the society.

When an immigrant arrives into a new place, one of the most difficult things is to find work. In order to look for a job, one has to be able to communicate with others. But as an immigrant, without knowledge of the local dialect, finding employers is rendered impossible. When Niels Lindstedt landed in Balfour, Manitoba, he only knew how to speak his native Swedish language. He almost lost courage as he was unable to talk to, or comprehend with others. But that didn't stop him from finding work. Niels Lindstedt began working on his own initiative when he saw the two men frantically lifting some load of bushel. He immediately set out to help them even though it was not his job. This sudden cause of action both confused and impressed Jim, the Scotsman. Jim was so impressed in fact that he relayed the presence of Niels to the

What immediately stood out was Goto’s deliberate attempt to examine the Canadian immigrant “experience,” drawing a contrast to that of Canadian born individuals. As we discover the protagonist once lived in British Columbia and is of Japanese-Canadian descent, the reader is instantly prompted to identify the protagonist as a product of the institutional racism inherent in British Columbia’s…

An immigrant faces many challenges in the new country they arrive in. Whether they chose go willingly to another country, or they do so because of necessity, the challenges do not decrease. The first challenge is to fit in and understand how anything works. Things such as the social norms, the expectations, and the civil regulations must be identified and adhered to. There is no one to help you initially, and you are thrust into the deep end with limited resources and limited knowledge. But the one thing that you do have is a drive, a motive. There is a clear reason for the immigrant to have left their country of origin, and a drive to accomplish something. This drive was evident in my parents, who came over from Pakistan under the pressure…

According to a 2015 census, there were about 43.2 million immigrants living in the United States. This made up about 13.4 percent of our nation’s population (Lopez and Radford). In the eyes of many, immigrants can be seen as very brave. Immigrants are constantly exploring into nations with expectations to find freedom from their native countries. They leave almost everything they own, with almost no money, and start a new…

Nelson Mandela once said "Our human compassion binds us the one to the other - not in pity or patronizingly, but as human beings who have learnt how to turn our common suffering into hope for the future." This quality of compassion is embodied by many characters throughout American literature. Mr. P in Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian displays compassion by guiding the way to a successful life for others. Penelope in Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian shows compassion by being there to comfort her friends during their time of need. Inman from Charles Frazier's Cold Mountain embodies compassion by always stopping to help people in need and preventing future disasters to come. These three characters show themselves to be whole hearted human beings by putting other people before themselves with deep compassion. Mr. P from the short novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian shows compassion by guiding a successful life for others. A way Mr. P shows compassion is when he tells Arnold he needs to escape the reservation, make something of himself, and keep his hope up. He says if Arnold continues to stay on the reservation he will not make anything of himself and will not have an opportunity to attend college. He explains he's a bright young student with a bright future but staying on the reservation will get him nowhere. Another example of Mr. P showing compassion is when he forgives Arnold for throwing the book at him and breaking his nose. He could have held a grudge and punished him but instead he gave him advice that would eventually turn out to be Arnold's best decision of his life.…

“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.”Atticus follows through exactly what he said in the novel several times. He displays courage when he agrees to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused wrongly of rape. In a southern town most people would have declined the job of defending a black man in court because people tend to very racists in the south. Yet the fear of being criticized or ridiculed by the townsfolk of Maycomb County seems to have no effect on Atticus and his belief that is, justice should be given to all.…
