-Historically, the church had a tremendous influence on culture's view of marriage in western culture.
-We have a culture that is becoming a more resistant to Christianity and to religion at large.
-The concept of marriage up until the 1960s was highly respected largely in part of the religious influence
-Now the culture is veering the other way
The Enlightenment
There was a backlash against the church during the 18th century. It was a reaction to the religious institutions after the French Revolution. These ideas began to permeate through the European's thinking.
There was a larger emphasis on Science, Reason, and self-centered lifestyle. And a little bit of a revolt against the extremists, faith, and tradition. Skepticism, opposed supperstition, opposition of the power of the church and the state.

It was a slow process, but it was setting the place. It began to take hold of the continent of Europe. And just like everything else, American got it later. There was a lot of religious influence in USA as well, but these ideas, propelled by the authors of the time, the founding fathers got some of their ideas
It was a watered down version of Christianity. The idea of Deism was born. There is a God, but we can't really know him. And He moves things along and is in control, but is removed and not really involved in the day-to-day
Now The 60's and 70's
Enlightenment takes hold in the late 1800s and 1900's
Existentialism- American version of the Enlightenment that furthered the ideas originally presented. 20th century extension of the Enlightenment movement. It was a challenging of the notion of God.
