1. Synopsis
The case of Cowgirl Chocolates is about a small chocolate producer, Cowgirl Chocolates, and the businesses owner/artist Marilyn Lysohir dilemma with how and why her business venture wasn’t profitable. Marilyn expresses her love for making award winning hot and spicy chocolates. She also discusses her hold up on different products, their packaging, and her disliking of using distributors. Marilyn doesn’t know why she isn’t making a profit, and the problem isn’t with her chocolates, it’s her lack of trust for others and her impulsiveness on making the company more of an art than a chocolate company.

Page 77 exhibit 4 puts Cowgirl Chocolate’s financial problems on display. The company’s expenses were $31,423 for cost of sales, and an additional $53,447 for total expenses out weighs the company’s low revenue, which stood at $30,046 for the year 2000. Exhibit 5 on page 78 also illustrates that Cowgirl is negative $5,051.15 in net profit after taxes. I feel that an easy way to cut some company expenses would to not travel to as many trade shows. I understand Cowgirl is trying to spread the word about

    “Alvarez’s follows many time-honored patterns: a vision, long hours, smart business instincts”. As an immigrant in the United States it is very difficult to blend in with society, never mind establish a business. Marley did this all with vision, without a vision there is no motivation. Alvarez understood that she had to work hard to succeed, so she followed her dream. As her company grew larger Alvarez purchased her shop and rented out several houses, collecting rent from her tenants and turning a profit. This success story illustrates someone coming from rags to riches with a vision, long hours, and smart business instincts. All and all Alvarez worked very hard to establish her business by putting in long hours. On the other hand Taza chocolate puts time and effort in their product, even though the price maybe steep the quality is top shelf. Whitmore took a trip to South-Mexico and learned the process of chocolate making. With an increase in machinery the process of chocolate making was more effective increasing the production and decreasing the time. Even though Taza Chocolate began by selling chocolate from the back of a bicycle it expanded to what it is today. Both stories teach many lessons, you always have to start from the bottom.…

    1) In this case, Candace and Charles Nelson displayed many characteristics associated with entrepreneurs such as, self-confidence, tolerance for ambiguity, high energy levels, and share a desire for independence. Candace and Charles displayed confidence by believing in them and in their cupcake business and made the decision to quit their lucrative careers to pursue the uncertainty of the cupcake only bakery. They both were obviously college educated and I am sure it takes a great deal of hard work and energy to be an investment banker. The Nelson’s brought their high energy level to Sprinkles. This is observed through Candace’s actions to get 300 cupcakes ready and flying on a red eye flight to be on the Oprah Winfrey show. Her hard work here gave Sprinkles the publicity it needed to gain a steady customer base. The Nelson’s ignored the negatives surrounding them and pursued their dream. One could argue that they desired independence. This could be the reason that they left lucrative careers that paid them well to venture out and open a cupcake only bakery. Here they are the owners, bosses, employees. They work for themselves and their success or failure is their own.…
