Purdue Online writing lab? Two helpful hints that will help all of you when creating an annotated bibliography is to use the APUS APA guide and the Purdue Online Writing Lab website when putting the citations together.
This helps ensure that all the information is placed in the proper places and if you have one of those computers with two monitors it is best to just keep the APA guide open in the second monitor when working on citations in the main monitor. These are some of my annotated bibliographies that I have created so far:
De Giorgio, A. (2016). Five theses on mass incarceration. Social Justice, 42(2), 5-30. Retrieved from http://www.questia.com
In this scholarly journal, Giorgi discuss the problem of mass incarceration from five different points of views. The author talks about the impact that mass incarceration has in disadvantage people and communities of color. The author also talks about the cost of mass incarceration, the rise of privatization of prisons and jails, and suggests possible solutions to combat this problem.
The author supports his ideas by providing current statics from different scholarly sources and organizations. Some of the writings and statistics in the text would be useful to support statements in the final project about the problems that mass incarceration creates and the cost involved with maintaining jails and
prisons.
Harmon, G. M. (2012). Fixe sentencing: The effect on imprisonment rates over time. Journal of Quantitative Criminology, 29, 369-397. doi: 10.1007/s10940-012-9182-x
This scholarly journal explains how fixed sentences is one of the main contributors that has created mass incarceration. The author supports his statements by contrasting the levels of incarceration prior fixed sentences reforms were passed and after they were passed. The author also explains the discretions that judges possess when sentencing criminals as well as the three strike laws that some states enforce. This scholarly journal will be useful to support statements about the causes of mass incarceration in the seminar’s final paper.
Lim, H. (2008). Finding explanations on the growth of incarceration and the reductions in crime: Incapacity or social threat? Retrieved from Criminal Justice Database. (Document no. 3329513)
The author of this dissertation attempts to find an answer as to why there is no reduction of incarceration when the crime rate reduces. The author supports his research with statistics from various academic approved organizations as well as from scholarly research. Some of the writings in the text would be useful in the final project to support statements about the causes of mass incarceration.
Tuchman, J. (Director). (1992). Exploring alternatives to prison and probation [Video file]. New York: Filmakers Library.
This academic video found in the Alexander Street Press database talks about the conditions in which prisoners live and its cost. Tuchman suggest possible alternatives to prison and probation and the author also discuss the benefits of these alternatives. The director supports his research and ideas by providing real cases of criminals and its outcomes. The director, then creates hypotheticals cases to demonstrate the benefits of the solutions that are being proposed. Some of the ideas in this academic video can be taken into consideration when proposing new solutions to combat the problem of the high cost of mass incarceration as well as when discussing the problem of ineffective rehabilitation.
