Creation Myth of Japan
Japanese Creation Myth

The world started with an egg containing all things. Over the years, the eggs darker and lighter parts drew away creating the earth and the heavens. The earth was the darker part, IN or also yin. The heavens was lighter, YO or yang. YO and IN are opposites and can not survive without each other. From the separation the first beings emerged, Izanagi which resembles YO and Izanami who resembles IN. YO is male and IN female.

Izanagi and Izanami found themselves standing on a bridge above a vast darkness sounding like rushing water. They asked each other if there was land beneath them, all the while Izanagi thrust a spear tipped with jewels into the water below.

When the spear came back up, the water seemed to have created an island called Onogoro-jima which means a spontaneously created island. They both descend to the island in which they decide to live and build the island. They decide to get married and walk around the world axle in opposite directions and meet again. They walked for months.

When they finally meet, Izanami exclaimed “What a wonderful man I have met!”

Izanagi did not like the fact that he was not the first to speak and ordered that they walk around the world axle again and do it correctly. When they met again, Izanagi was first to speak, “What a lovely women I have met!”

They explained to each other that they had an empty part in them and they each complete each other as husband and wife.

Over the years, they have many children, the first being the island of Ahaji and six more creating an eight island country known as Japan.

After creating the eight island country, Izanagi and Izanami have several more children who became gods or elements. Their last child the god of fire killed Izanami during birth sending her to Yomi, the underworld.

In the beginning, the heaven and earth were still one and all was in chaos. The universe was like a big black egg, carrying Pan Gu inside itself. After eighteen thousand years, Pan Gu woke up from a long sleep. Because he felt suffocated, he took up a broad ax and wielded it with all his might to crack open the egg in which he is in. He formed the heavens and the cold, turbid matter formed the earth. Pan Gu stood between them, his head touching the sky, his feet planted on the earth, so that the heaven and the earth would never join again. When Pan Gu died, his body parts became the things on earth. According to some versions of the Pan Gu legend, the sun shone when he was happy, but black clouds gathered in the sky when he was angry. One version of the legend has it that the fleas and lice on his body became the ancestors of mankind.…

When the world is destroyed, it is born again through the sacrifice of one of the gods. The world began as a lonely, dark place. The god of duality, Ometecuhtli created itself and it was good and bad. Ometecuhtli had four children: Huitzilopochtli (south), Quetzalcoatl (east), Tezcatlipoca (west), and Xipe Totec (north). These gods created the world. First they made fire and half a sun. Then, they created humans during four days by sacrificing a god. Then, the gods created the lords of the underworld, the heavens and waters, the rain god (Tlaloc), and a sea monster named Cipactli . The creations of the gods would fall into the water and be eaten by Cipactli. This lead to a war where the four gods attacked and destroyed the sea monster. The universe was created from Cipactli: all 13 heavens were created in her head, the earth was created in the middle, and the underworld was created in her tail. Following the creation of the world, “The Legend of the Five Suns” states that five different worlds have existed with each one ending in destruction. The first sun was earth, the second sun was air, the third sun was fire, the fourth sun was water, and the fifth sun is the age we are currently in. The myth states that this era will end with…

“The Navajo Creation Myth,” is able to effectively teach the nature of relationships between people, also, it excels in entertaining its listeners, but it falls a bit short when it comes to the describing the culture or history of the people as it really isn’t the main purpose of the story. A big function of the third world chapter is about the origins of how men and women interact in their society currently. There was a disagreement between the two sexes and the god decided it would be best to split them up. Men would live on one side of the river and women would live on the other. Over time the Men were able to sustain themselves, but the women could not maintain their crops or hunt as efficiently as the men could. They petitioned the god to bring them back together, and the god would allow it, but only under the agreement that they must follow…

Long ago, the weather was just warm and the grass was just green. Every person on earth was happy the way they were, and the way everything was. God was always trying to bring new things into Earth, to complete its perfectness. One day God had this big feeling that he needed to create something for Earth and his people. But what could it be? Everything was already so perfect. So God asked and angel named Jack to go down to Earth and figure out what was missing. Jack went down and searched and searched, he disguised himself as a human and asked many children and adults, “If you could add something to our earth, what would it be?” everybody’s answers were the same. They all said that there was no needed change. Jack reported back to God and told him everything, but God still didn’t agree. He thought and thought of different ideas every day. One day, He caught a cold, and He couldn’t stop coughing or sneezing. Even when He had this cold, he still looked over Earth every single day and tried to improve it. But right when God was just about to give up and say the Earth was perfect enough, He let out the biggest strongest sneeze anyone could imagine. His sneeze was so powerful that it blew all the clouds onto the ground onto Earth and made them stay over top of the grass and cover every single thing on Earth in soft white stuff. When God seen this, He was appalled. He thought he ruined everything. But then a bright idea came into Angel Jack’s head. He said “Well since Earth has only warm weather and green grass, what if these clouds turn into cold soft ice and the weather becomes cold for half the year?” God thought this was a brilliant idea, so He did what Jack suggested. He turned the clouds and weather cold. He decided to call the clouds snow. He then told Jack to go check it out and see how the humans reacted. Jack once again went down to Earth and disguised himself. He asked all the children and adults what they thought of this…
