Macbeth is an anti-hero whose ambition has cost him his soul, his peace and his sleep. Macbeth is introduced as a worthy gentleman and a noble thane (Glamis). At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is given a prophecy. He is predicted to be the Thane of Cawdor and then King of Scotland. However, it is also predicted that his best friend’s (Banquo) descendants will be kings. The ambition in Macbeth grows in such a proportion that he is able to commit murder. However, it should be explained that he initially refused to succumb to ambition. It was a struggle for him to overcome the barriers to his principles and values created in him. However, Lady Macbeth finds the way of making Macbeth commit murder by questioning his manhood. Macbeth is finally crowned king, but he is still not happy, Duncan’s murder and all the others he orders, had cost him many things, his mind is full of anguish and guilt. Nevertheless, a question arises. Is Macbeth evil?
The purpose of this text is to give some insight into Macbeth’s character. It is led to believe that he was evil, which is why he was easily convinced to commit murder in order to achieve his ambitions. However the question remains as to whether he was evil or not. If he were evil, would he have felt anguish, guilt and despair?
