Invasion of the Ugly Ogres
We felt our way along like three blind mice through the morning fog. Until at last we left the cold, damp, mist behind and emerged into a backdrop of wind and grit. I was about to suggest we wait until tomorrow before crossing the kingdom when a set of powerful gray hands clamped around my ankle.
“Back off, ugly.” I drew my sword.
“Ah, the little brat, wants to play at being a bad boy?” the monster said in scorn. “Well, we’re tired of playing, kid. So now it’s time for you to die.”
I kicked at his claws and there was a low wicked howl. Three hideous ogres the color of death marched out from behind the trees and completely surrounded us. I raised my sword and lunged at the gigantic beasts.

A deep voice from behind us snarled, “Lost who?”
We both jumped and turned around. There in the entry niche, standing beside an armored statue, was a two-foot-tall blue gremlin with bat-like wings, long floppy ears, and a squashed face.
“None of your business,” Cotton snapped. “Now beat it.”
The gremlin stuck his tongue out at Cotton, then trotted down the steps and across the sand.
“Like I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted,” Cotton said. “The whole idea of going inside is insane. We have no clue who lives in that castle. For all we know, whoever’s inside could be far worse than those foul monsters we just ran away from.”
“Cotton, the ogres are still after us,” I told him.
“I know,” he said. “While we were running I looked back and saw their eyes glowing in the dust.”
“Well then, what are we going to do? Just stand here and wait to be eaten by the disgusting monsters with fangs as long as my arm. Or should we go inside and maybe find someone nice who will help us with our quest.”
