The Spiral of…
Darkness

I looked at my mom, then at the seat next to her. Dad couldn’t come because of a meeting, but I didn’t care! I couldn’t hold myself together, I felt like I was going to explode into little sparkles of excitement. My excitement is about to burst out of my chest. I’m going on an airplane! Then I heard a horrendous sound like nails on a chalkboard, my body jerked forward, I smelt the metal nasty smell of blood, lastly darkness closed in on me, tight.

I tried to open my eyes but all I could see was darkness. All around me darkness sits, still and quiet. I heard a creak, then a minuscule and weak voice talked, “Sydney, are you alright?” “Mmm” was all I could get out of my weak and tired body. Then the voice talked to me again, “Sydney, this is Dad speaking. The doctor just told me that the impact of you hitting the seat in front of you was very hard, it blinded you for life.” Darkness grabbed me, never letting me be perky and happy again

I looked around and I wasn’t in my room anymore, I was in the hospital during my grandpa’s surgery. The waiting room was cold and sterile and the smell of antiseptic was so strong I could taste it. Waves of uneasiness washed over me as if they were trying to drown me. My grandma and my mother were sitting in the room with me and they looked just as scared. I remembered how long my grandpa was in surgery to get his windpipe removed, how I had thought that I wouldn’t make it through the hours he was and that if he didn’t then I wouldn’t make it for much longer afterward.…

As Fin walked along the street the leaves of the oak trees shone like patches of blue velvet, but when he stopped still nothing shimmered. The waves refused to move. The glow of the city still seeped into the morning sky, forever. He felt he must be dreaming, and yet he was sure he wasn't dreaming because everything felt so real. Surely his brain was not powerful enough to create such a masterful illusion. Or was it? He felt his head imploding just trying to figure it…

“Mom, mom, mom, mom!” I was practically screaming. I already knew what she was going to say. I just sat back on the couch and watched as a tear streamed down my face into my hand. I eventually fell asleep on the couch. I woke up at three in the morning and I could see the sun peaking out with the stars and moon retreating back until another night. I don’t know what came across me but I thought to myself why people are so cruel. I looked outside to see if anyone was out there. I just saw an empty street, just like one of those old ghost towns in old western movies.…

I suddenly woke up to an extremely bright white light shining straight into my eyes. Quickly I tried to sit up from my laying position, but I couldn't. Straps were restraining my legs and torso to a cold, metal table. Finally my eyes became focused and I scanned the surrounding room. Where was I? I was sitting in a tiny, unfamiliar place. It was covered floor to ceiling in a silver chrome color, almost like it was made out of mirrors. Looking up I saw…

As he opened his car door he looked back at me, sighed, and then ducked into the driver seat. I sank down onto the sidewalk. I could feel the hot tears on my face, they dripped off, giving the tulips a scorching shower. I fell over and huddled into a ball, trying to escape from the outside world. That’s where my mom found me an hour later when she came home from work. That’s the position I stayed in until she dragged me up onto my feet and swept me into the house. Sounds of men pulling potatoes out of the ground filled the air as the children ran around our huts like birds that filled the area. The sun gleamed in our faces while we watered the plants, our faces burned to ashes, while at night our only protection from the freezing, desert night weather was the dirt on the ground. A forbidden trail was on the west side of the country. Rumours say that the road may contain monsters, evil spirits and no end. Every man or woman who entered this area was never seen again. Screams were heard from the forests, accompanied by cracking of eggs. This is told to be the dragon’s egg cracking to attack the helpless victims of curiosity.…

I tried to speak but words couldn’t come out of my mouth. In a perplexed trance, I sluggishly walked through what felt like an abyss and without any thought, climbed into the back of the ambulance with her. I was almost blinded by the brightness in that ambulance. Fighting every pulsating cell in my brain, I attempted to babble a few words of encouragement to my daughter’s unconscious body.…
