The recent summer rainstorms have transformed the roadways, of Wrongberight a rural hamlet on the eastern shores of Virginia, into a never-ending slip and slide. Late Saturday afternoon, vivacious Clemmy Sue Jarvis, a petite woman of sixty three, cautiously pulled out of her driveway, and slowly turned south on to Flat Bottom Road. She maneuvered the rain soaked road with great care. Nevertheless, fifty yards from her dearest friend Estelle Louise’s long dirt driveway, her rusty Chevy pickup, that she has kept mobile for years with hairpins, bubble gum, and duct tape, skidded across a massive oil slick. As a result, the pickup spins in wide circles as…

When I was much younger, I had the opportunity to live in rural Georgia. While living there I had the assumption, since I had medical insurance everyone else does too. During this time I made some friends of which I had learned their family did not have health insurance. This raised my awareness of various topics. The first was not everyone is the same and not everyone has what you have. Looking back after reading and the live classroom, I realize having health insurance was a privilege, and in my case could be considered an unearned privilege. This is due to the fact my health insurance, which was earned by my father who was serving in the US Air Force, was given to me because I was his dependent. Listening to the live classroom, I came across some similarities as my classmates.…

In sixth grade, I stood before a podium that stared back at my English class. This was not how I envisioned sharing my love for reading and writing; however, it was required. My palms felt sticky, and I just knew that the entire class could see my heart as it was about to hop from the walls that kept it safe. I prayed that I would not forget the lines as I recited The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. In sixth grade, reading, writing, and I started a relationship. Today, we have yet to break up.…

I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

I enjoyed my hour and six minutes in the wild. It was a little cold, but nevertheless beautifly. I was at peace and I felt closer to God. I wonder if that is how Chris McCandless felt when he was in the wild. He couldn’t just sit around like I did. He had to survive. Food was an issue for him as well as running water. While I was already fed and could easily go inside my home to get a drink. Even though, I wasn’t in the actual wild, like Chris, my backyard was just enough.…

It was the most casual winter day of the year. My body under a blanket, Hot chocolate in one hand and a T.V. Remote in the other. I was flipping from channel to channel trying to find a show that I could settle on. My eyes were glued to the bright screen, although I could see each and every snowflake falling out of the sky. It was hard not to admire. Here in Michigan, We have the most beautiful winters, and the nicest of summers. I love to diversity that comes with all the weather rather than having a dreaded summer all year like in Florida, and a harsh year round winter like Alaska. The hot chocolate that I had just whipped up was still scorching hot and was burning my lips after every sip. The whipped cream helped dim the chocolates temperature. After searching almost every channel, I decided that I should just watch some ESPN. I usually didnt watch ESPN that often because they often report the same things over and over. I remember once when I was about 10 years old and Rob Gronkowski was injured. One day I saw that they were…

One evening I had just sat down to watch the darkened scene below, when I saw a young looking man walking quickly toward a running car, parked under one of the only two street lights. He appeared to be nervous as he continued to look back over his shoulders. I watched more intently now. Then, just as suddenly as I noticed him, I saw three men in black, almost concealed in the darkness, moving swiftly up behind him. I watched as the shortest of the three pulled a gun out and began firing at the lone man. When I saw him hit the ground, I about fell out of my chair. Just as quickly as the three appeared, they vanished into a pitch black alley. I sat there trembling from what I had just witnessed. Too scared to call the police, I finally retreated to bed.…
