We were making our way through the midwest on a very cold morning when I saw an animal that looked like a dog, but seemed to be much smaller. As I tried to near it to get a better look it barked continuously until I was out of sight. I noticed that when the animals felt alarmed the whole village quickly steps into their holes. As well as noticing that I also noticed that they make a call when there is a predator near, and once that predator is gone they give out a second call. The small little animals live in burrows underground. They live in large communities,of what seemed to be hundreds. Their burrows are mostly in shortgrass areas. Their diet seemed to consist of grass, roots, and seeds. As I sat and continued to watch them
I heard them communicating, with what seemed like loud cries. I decided to dig up one of their burrows, that didn't seem to have any of them in it, to see what it was like. I couldn't make out much except that they share food amongst themselves, and family groups seemed to be grooming one another. As soon as I walked away I saw the dogs building their burrows, which they spent a lot of time doing. We managed to kill one and I finally got a good look. They have fine fur with a hairy black tipped tail and long toe nails. Rounded ears, large black eyes. Their fur is a shade of brown on the top of their bodies, but then fades into a whitish color. They weighed about 2-4 pounds and were fairly short, with having their body being only around 12-15 inches long.
