The next second she blinked, and her face cleared. Mimi nodded to confirm her answer. “Yes, but let’s hurry up,” she urged.

Steve and Mimi dashed through the cemetery gates together, leaving the rusty hinges creaking and swinging behind them. The ground was lined with brittle gravel that crunched beneath their feet with every step. For a while, there was no other sound.

“What’s that on the left?” Mimi questioned. “There’s a faint glow coming from behind that tree.” Her face paled as she seemed to be remembering her grandmother’s story.

“We should check it out,” Steve grinned.

“No way! We shouldn’t even be in here in the first place!”

“Come on, Mimi. . . . You’re no fun. Just a quick peek and then we’ll be right out,” Steve promised.

Steve just took her hand and tugged her toward the light. He had to admit he was a bit unnerved but didn’t want to lose this opportunity to impress Mimi with his bravery. She was clearly frightened out of her mind, even if she wouldn’t say so.
“It must lead to a crypt,” Mimi marveled as they approached the light. It was emitting from two lamps that hung from the roof of a small marble building, complete with several angel statues and a large door.
