Cricket: It is the word that gives my whole body an adrenaline rush. It is not just a game. It’s a religion. There’s only one religion that I follow, and that’s Cricket. I believe in only one god, that’s Sachin Tendulkar. This Indian is the best and most popular cricketer in the world. He’s my idol and it is fair to say that my ideals are shared by my countrymen.
The country comes to a stop when a cricket match is being played. The roads are deserted, parties and weddings are postponed, operations in hospitals are rescheduled, and parliament goes in for early closing. That’s how passionate we are for our RELIGION. In 2011, when India reached finals of the world cup, that day was unofficially declared as a national holiday. Every single Indian was glued to his/her respective TV screen, praying for team India to win their second world cup. It was their moment of glory. It was only the third time that India had reached the finals of the world cup. Prayers of billions of people finally came true when Mahinder Singh Dhoni, captain of Indian cricket team, finished the match in style by knocking a long and relished six. The vociferous, jam packed crowd at Wankhede stadium erupted in wild celebrations as India crowned themselves world champions one more time.
Aftermath
Whole nation came on streets. Danced on night long and played dhol (musical instrument resembling the drum) while blocking the traffic all across the city. Thousands and thousands of people gathered at India Gate to celebrate this great achievement, and I was proud to be one of them as the air was filled with the people chanting “India India India”. Feeling of patriotism could be seen on every man’s face and heard on their voices. Even the people who don’t follow cricket celebrated this massive victory. When I saw these scenes live, tears came into my eyes. I felt goose bumps all across my body. I was so overwhelmed to see how many people loved my favourite sport.
