Crime Data Comparison Paper
According to the F.B.I uniform crime data report violent crime has increased in 2012 compared 2011, the increase has amounted to 1.2 percent. The category of violent crime includes murder, rape, assault, robbery, and aggravated assault. ("Preliminary Annual Uniform Crime Report, January-December, 2012 ", 2012). Murder is by far the most serious violent crime there is. America has the highest murder rate in the world. The city with the highest murder rate in the U.S so far in 2013 is Chicago IL.
Of the ten most deadly cities in America today, Chicago is number one. At the rate of two murders a day Chicago is on pace to have 730 murders in 2013 this number is up from 2012 when there was 506 murders in the city. (Galik, 2013).
Going back to 2012 the deadliest city was Flint MI. which, if the trend continues will be surpassed by Chicago. According to (Galik, 2013) In 2012 Flint MI. has a murder rate of 66.9 murders per 100,000 people compared to Chicago’s of 18.7. Although the city police chief and a city spokesperson would not comment, the Mayor of Flint, Dayne Walling, a PhD and Rhodes Scholar blame “the high murder and other crimes on the availability of illegal guns and drugs”. Other economic issues also plague the city, according to Barillas (2013), “the challenged city, has coped with failing schools and infrastructure, outmigration and industrial collapse” (Para.5).
According to the web site America 's 10 Deadliest Cities 2012, the list of the deadliest cities in America is as follows, (1) Flint MI. which has already been mentioned, (2) Detroit, MI. with a murder rate of 54.6 murders per 100,000 people, (3) New Orleans, La. with a rate of 53.5 murders per 100,000 people, (4) St. Lewis, Mo. 35.5 murders per 100,000 people, (5) Baltimore, MD. 33 murders per 100,000 people, (6) Birmingham, AL. 33.7 murders per 100,000 people, there is a tie for
