In England and Wales we have in place a criminal justice system which is made up of many agencies which are their protect the public and the offenders. Most of the agencies work closely together; they consist of the Police, CPS, Courts, Probation, Prisons and Youth Justice. “Criminal Justice is about societies formal response to crime and is defined more specifically in terms of a series of decisions and actions taken by a number of agencies in response to a specific crime or criminal or crime in general” (Davies et al., 2010:8).
The aims of the criminal justice are protect the public by deterring and preventing crime, they help to rehabilitate offenders and incapacitate them when necessary. Their main aim is to uphold justice while promoting the rule of law. They ensure that the right procedures are followed within treatment of suspects, defendants those is custody and the prosecuting of criminals. The criminal justice system in England and Wales help to maintain public order, they deal with sentencing or criminals and assisting victims. They also aim to maintain public confidence within criminal justice. The purpose of the Criminal Justice System (CJS) is to deliver justice for all, by convicting and punishing the guilty and helping them to stop offending, while protecting the innocent. It is responsible for detecting crime and bringing it to justice; and carrying out the orders of court, such as collecting fines, and supervising community and custodial punishment.
The Police firstly investigate cases by gathering evidence that they then present to the Crown Prosecution Service. They then decide whether to proceed with the case or not. If a case is continued, it then moves to the various courts depending on the seriousness of the crime it will either go to
