Crime in Kansas City
Crime in Kansas City Murders, rapes, robberies, assaults, burglaries, and theft are all put into the same category, crime. Any of these crimes can relate to deaths. Which is something no one wants. Kansas City's violent crime and murder rates are among the nations highest, and has been for many years. its embarrassing that Kansas City is lumped together with other cities that are notorious for their high crime rates, such as Detroit, St.Louis, Oakland, Memphis, Atlanta, and Cleveland. Kansas City's crime risk is more tun three times the national average. i guess it could be worse. we could be St.Louis, the nations number one city for crime. The national crime data from 2011 showed that Kansas City had the 10th highest rate of violent crime of 72 US cities with more than 250,000 people. Our murder rates were seventh highest of the 72 large cities, and second highest of its midwestern peers. These figures show that supporters of state control have few facts on their side when arguing that the current arrangement does much to keep the crimes in Kansas City low. Boosters of local control point out that a change could lead to more innovative approaches to battling crime. Elected officials and the entire city hall staff must have more responsibility and accountability for reducing crime in the future. Kansas city is one the few US cities without local control of its police agencies. KCs police staffing and police budget were compared to 10 other cities: Denver, Fort Worth, Indianapolis, Memphis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Oklahoma City, Omaha, St. Louis and Tulsa. Kansas City had the second highest cost for its Police Department per 1,000 residents. And the third highest number of uniformed and civilian employees per 1,000 residents. So that being said, why does Kansas city have such a high crime rate?     Criminal behavior and violence have been present in the United States and throughout the world for many centuries. Crime comes in many different shapes and forms.     Chicago police are so busy fighting major crime, that people are starting to feel panicked and alone in the battle against violence. This sense of nervousness results in an increased possession of illegal firearms throughout the city, which in return is a possible reason for the high crime rates in Chicago. Not only do the police and gun problems result in violence, but so does the quality of life. The main problem with the quality of life in Chicago is that the youth is being introduced to violence at a very young age. Kids in many of the impoverished neighborhoods where the crime happens most, commonly spend most of their time out on the streets playing with other children. Some of these children don’t have great lives at home or a home at all. According to The Chicago Tribune, "There's too many young people who are out here who have no family, and so their friends become their family,"(Gorner). This can result in a dangerous situation because without the right role models, these children are prone to befriending dangerous people and can start to interact in the violence themselves, creating a whole cycle of danger. Obviously, Chicago can’t relieve its violence problem overnight, but with enough support and effort Chicago can surely bounce back to what it once was. The main solutions require additional employment opportunities in the city, an increase of community programs and a better relationship between law enforcement and citizens.
