The most common areas that crimes are committed are in areas that are subjected to poverty. Many kids are influenced by the community they live in. Poverty puts a great deal of stress on people and they often lack material things that they need or want. They feel pressured being in a poor society that values material possessions and wealth. For example, generations are brought up in the housing developments and kids are not accustomed to wanting more out of life other that what they are surrounded by daily. Tearing down the old housing developments and involving mix income has become a success in the housing system. Crime has dropped drastically in the new developments and hopefully soon they will all be torn down and replaced with the modern apartment style

Over the millions of years that humans have been on this earth, many communities have come to existence. The great Egyptians, and the Roman empire, are just to name a few but none are more diverse and complex than the city of New Orleans. A city founded on the worlds’ second largest river, New Orleans is a place that has thrived for many years. Though it is always at risk of natural disasters, the people stay true to its’ traditions and diversity. The “Who Dat Nation” will always be strong and supportive of not only their team but of their community. Natives will always hold onto their French heritage as-well. The Creole people have been able to maintain a strong tie to the French language, as well as practicing Catholicism. A favorite expression…

One thing that correlates to the crimes is child maltreatment. When they child is not taken care of they tend to veer off and find other means of living and making ends meet. Another variable is alcoholism and drug use. A parent or parents is a child’s biggest role model and so are their siblings and any other older siblings. If a child grows up always seeing nothing but alcohol around the house and their family getting high off of pills and smoking than they are naturally going to take that lifestyle in and think that it is normal and okay and they will think that everyone else around them lives the same lifestyle. Bullying has in my world been a major variable. Whens someone is bullied they think that they need to find their own happy place and they claim that committing crimes does that for them. For example when a person gets in a fight or steals something and all the attention is turned on them, that is the highlight of their lives because everyone always bullied them. Single or no parent homes is probably one of the biggest variables. Like I mentioned before a parent or parents are a child’s biggest role models. A child’s mind is like a sponge and they always play the game of monkey see monkey do. This will never go away even when they are all grown up and moved out. I was a child that was in a single family home and there was nothing I would of ever…

According to Preventing Lethal Violence in New Orleans, A Great American City, “These findings so far do not suggest a significant differentiation in the nature of homicide in New Orleans. However, this changes somewhat when one examines method. Nearly 90 percent of all homicides we reviewed were committed by firearms” (Voigt, Harper, and Thornton 133-140). Based on this dismal fact lead to the conclusion that something needs to be done about the gun violence in New Orleans. First, criminologists who deal with juveniles believe poverty, family factors, the environment, media influence, and declining social morality are the main reasons for juvenile crime. It is considered out-dated to say that poverty causes crime, but nearly 22% of children under the age of eighteen live in poverty. Disorganization, dilapidation, deterioration, and despair are all associated with social isolation and economic stress, which are two main factors of poverty (O'Connor). Police patrol through run-down, poverty-stricken areas more frequent in large cities. To the kids in these areas, this only backs up the idea that the enemy is society. Another indicator of juvenile crime is fatherless children. In the United States we see fathers as the ones who provide economic stability, act as role models, and alleviate the stress of mothers. Without a father, many young men have no one to turn to as a role model. About 50% of marriages in the US end in…

Black on black violence has been on the rise in the recent years. 1 in 146 black males are at risk of violent death, whereas the ratio for white men is 1 in 189. What do we mean by “Black on Black crime?” It may be described as anytime a Black person inflicts violent harm on another Black person. The effects of this violence in the Black community are tremendous. Violence is very much part of what it means to be Black in America. Another issue in America is putting the wrong people on death row. Most of the time it is just to a guilty verdict so the prosecutor’s family can move on. This is exactly what happened in the case of Walter McMillian who was accused and found guilty of murdering a Ronda Morrison by gunshot. In this passage I will explain some of the black on black violence seen in America, talk about some of the excerpts from Les Payne and Glenn Loury’s argument, and explain McMillians trial…

    Race And Crime Essay

As I wrap up my blog we have seen that crime is not race specific. All races commit crime, furthermore all races participate in gang activity, it is just not reserved for Black and Latinos. All of the examples used in the previous blogs are not exclusive to certain races. What makes the difference is how society views who is a criminal and who commits crimes. Added to this, is the disproportion of how crime is handled. With the exception of heinous and violent crimes, many people who commit crimes will most likely get away with it. How the criminal justice system handles cases can affect who goes to prison and who doesn’t. Furthermore criminals that are more culpable may get away with lighter sentences, than those that are only accessories to the crime, simply because of their race, or because they can afford better attorneys.…

If a person grows up around gangs and crime, there is a higher chance they will develop more violent thoughts than the average individual. If a person's family is poor, wanting to harm someone that has more money is a thought that comes across one's mind, which could ultimately lead to criminal behavior. Growing up in an environment where parents do not care what their children do causes the children to act out for attention. This is with them throughout their whole life, and even as adults they feel like what they do doesn’t matter because they were not disciplined as a child. Criminals aim towards the nicer environments, because that’s something they’ve never had.…

Hurricane Katrina caused many forms of distress, displacement and disruption to the community of New Orleans and the citizens most certainly were forced to act in drastic ways for survival. The response by the people has been considered forms of criminal activity and in all senses of legal activity has been defined as crime. Acts of looting and violence were reported by many reporters of various news media. Crimes were not only committed by everyday citizens of New Orleans, but volunteer workers as well and even, what people saw as the most shocking display of violence and betrayal of trust, by the Law Enforcement Officials as well. What is also interesting is how this destructive event altered the residents’ perception of what is crime and what can be considered criminal. What was once considered to be a betrayal of trust towards another member of the community had been transformed into an activity that was now a means of survival. Some of the acts varied from a “need” to steal because they “had to” (i.e., stealing from Bath and Body works for soap, supermarkets for food, water, clothes, etc.) and then increasing to other side of the spectrum to murder of strangers, friends, and even family. Hurricane Katrina caused a massive social disruption to the people of New Orleans and this catastrophic event would eventually lead to their breakdown of societal rules and values. And it is this breakdown that would not be lost to the eyes of the news media and would be broadcast everywhere, all across the world (of Katrina, apocalypse 2005).…

Over the centuries, crime has been seen to increase with the rise of civilizations and modernity. It is neither affected by political occurrences nor by economic crisis. The first half of the 20th century saw crime rate increase moderately in a few areas; mostly in burglaries and muggings, but less in murders and drunkenness. The stipulation of tighter laws and a change in leisure habits caused a reduction in the latter. New social tendencies have seen marriage break ups and changes in lifestyles of the western world affect many families, and the children involved in them (Rob Watts 131). It is becoming widely accepted that most children that rise from single parenthood are much more likely to end up in juvenile cases, and later become dependent on welfare or crime in later years, than children brought up in intact families…
