ADX Supermax was constructed as a response to an incident that occurred on October 22, 1983, in which two inmates murdered their accompanying guards at Marion State Penitentiary. The prison goal is to provide a detention facility for the highest risk inmates in the federal system. The prison houses several prisoners who have been deemed too dangerous or too high-profile to ever be in a normal prison. Standard procedure is to keep the prisoners are in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day. This 490 bed facility houses drug lords, gang leaders, spies, and the majority of convicted terrorists. Many of its cells are fashioned out of poured concrete with solid steel doors and are equipped with built-in showers and automated chutes that open onto private concrete exercise yards in a way that inmates never need to see a guard or fellow prisoner.
United States Penitentiary Administrative Maximum Facility is unofficially known as ADX Florence, Florence ADMAX, Supermax, or “The Alcatraz of the Rockies”. The prison as a whole contains a multitude of motion detectors and cameras, 1,400 remote-controlled steel doors, and 12 ft high razor wire fences. Many prisoners at ADX endlessly wail scream, and bang on the walls of their cells. Some mutilate their bodies with razors shards of glass sharpened chicken bones writing utensils, and whatever other objects they can obtain. A number of inmates try to swallow razor blades nail clippers parts of radios and televisions broken glass, and other dangerous objects. Others carry on delusional conversations with voices they hear in their heads, oblivious to reality and to the danger that such behavior might pose to themselves and anyone who interacts with them.
