If I were to be put in this situation and had sincerely promised the man that I wouldn't tell where he was, I believe that it would be best to tell the cops that, yes, I had seen him. However, I would be very vague. I would let them know that I had seen the man and I would point in the general direction in which he ran past me to get to the bush, but I would not let them know he was hiding there.

Because I assumed he was a criminal, I also made the assumption that the police officers who came after, were in pursuit of him. As a result of believing that he is a criminal and was desperately running away from law enforcement, I assumed he must have done something wrong. At the same time, I felt the urge to protect him. Perhaps I'm just jaded towards the justice system and especially police officers, but I also felt as if the man was in trouble and that it was my moral duty to keep him hidden. I started to assume that maybe the man was framed. Additionally, I believed it's possible that the man was running out of fear of law enforcement. Since he was so exasperated and worn out from running, I assumed he had not only been running a long time, but he also was hellbent on not getting caught by whoever was chasing him. Secondly, I assumed that the man that they were in pursuit of was that man. There was no concrete evidence that made it clear that the man they were after was the one who I had just talked to, but that's the assumption that I made. Something else that I assumed about the officers was that they were all three white males. Snowballing from that assumption, I then assumed that perhaps they were being overzealous in their pursuit. Because I had no real reason to question it, I assumed that they were on duty at the time.
