Due to the abnormal increase in the percentage of violent crimes from the past two decades, the investigative technique, most commonly referred to as criminal profiling, has rose in popularity both in practical use and media portrayals.
Criminal profiling as a law enforcement tool emerged in the late 1960s from the work of FBI special agents Howard Teten and Pat Mullany. Nowadays the leading entity engaged in profiling is the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVC) of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

John Leonard Orr was a serial arsonist that threatened Southern California during the 1980s. The amazing thing about this particular offender is that he was a fire captain and an arson investigator himself.
John Orr was considered one of the best investigators, highly respected in his field among his peers. He began his days in the Air Force fire suppression unit. Later on he would go apply for a job as a firefighter but would constantly violate rules being the rebel in the unit. After his days as a firefighter he moved on to become an investigator and that is where he truly gained fame. No matter how late he would appear at fire scenes he seemed to be able to think like the arsonist and uncover clues no one else could uncover. Thus with an impressive record like this it was tough to place him as a suspect. It would later be uncovered that a fingerprint found on a yellow lined notebook paper recovered at one of the crime scenes in Bakersfield on January 16, 1987 would be identified as coming from Orr's left ring finger. The piece of paper was part of a time-delay incendiary device. This paper would link John Orr to the
