I chose this method of intervention due to the nature of Eileen’s situation. Eaton and Roberts (2009) as cited in Teater (2014) stated that a crisis can be caused by an intensely stressful and traumatic event. It can be argued that Eileen is in a state of crisis following the collision with the young boy causing serious harm. In addition Eileen is also experiencing a considerable amount of stress from work which has resulted in a pattern of heavy drinking. Eileen’s problems are consolidated by the existence of a current drink problem which features throughout our meeting. Crisis intervention views the individual as having already established coping mechanisms in dealing with stressful events (Teater, 2014). I incorporated the seven stage crisis intervention model which aided me in the interview process with Eileen. With that in mind during the interview process I worked towards aiding Eileen in developing upon her previous coping mechanisms to deal with stress and traumatic events. Eileen identified times in the past where she enjoyed attending outdoor excursions with her husband which helped her alleviate stress. An interesting point made by Eileen was how she enjoys her own time where she can focus on her passion for traditional cooking and baking. I explored this further with Eileen and discussed whether she could use these previous coping mechanisms as a way of helping her today. Eileen acknowledged this and agreed to utilise these coping mechanisms following our initial interview. For our next meeting I prompted Eileen in relation to a discussion around how this went, what worked, and what could have worked
