There are two components to the CBT family; Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) and Cognitive Therapy (CT). Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy was developed by psychiatrist, Dr. Albert Ellis. REBT takes a comprehensive approach to psychological treatment that deals with the emotional and behavioral aspects of human disturbance, but with emphasis on the cognitive component (Gomathy & Singh, 2007). Ellis believed that psychological problems originate from misperceptions and mistaken cognitions about what was perceived. Additionally, problems also occur from emotional under reactions or over reactions to normal and unusual stimuli; and from habitual dysfunctional behavior patterns which enabled them to keep repeating non-adjustive responses…

According to Friedberg (2006), he argues that “a cognitive behavioral perspective, the family environment is the milieu where children and parents’ cognitions are played out” (p.160). Family therapy has become a new field as many therapists have not integrated CBT into working with families. Friedberg (2006) states that “cognitive behavioral family therapy recognizes that a change in one person in the system changes the other individuals within the family” (p. 160). Cognitive behavioral therapy used for a counselor that specializes in family would go about changing the family's individual beliefs about what roles each member has within the familial context. One method of changing these beliefs would be to use “cognitive restructuring, rational…
Mental illnesses are more readily labeled today than at any other time in history. Today it is estimated that approximately 26 percent of the American adult population suffers from some mental illness. Growth in this number will likely skyrocket as a younger generation grows out of the category of the age of onset ‘teens’ into young adults. When it is commonplace for patients to hesitate before questioning their doctors, the possibility of becoming overwhelmed in a sea of side effects that are worse than the threat they encounter from the disorder grows. While it is difficult to narrow medicine down to a one size fits all answer, a look at a specific personality disorder, in which the patient is often misdiagnosed or labeled as normal…
According to The Free Dictionary, mental illness is defined as, “Any of various psychiatric conditions, usually characterized by impairment of an individual 's normal cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning, and caused by physiological or psychosocial factors “(The Free Dictionary, 2007). Mental illness can certainly be a physical illness, but is not as easily diagnosed like a disease such as diabetes. In a disease like diabetes, physicians can run tests to look for certain indicators of the disease in the blood like the levels of blood glucose and hemoglobin A1C. Sometimes physical conditions can cause mental illnesses. Unlike diseases like diabetes, mental health diagnoses’ often rely more on the patient relaying their symptoms to their physician or health care provider. This could not be as accurate because the patient may be unable to distinguish all of their symptoms or they may not think to tell the health care provider every symptom that they are suffering. According to John Grohol PsyD, “Treating mental illness rarely results in a “cure,” per se. What it does result in is a person feeling better, getting better, and eventually no longer needing treatment (in most cases). But even then, rarely will a professional say, “Yes, you’re cured of your depression.””(Grohol PsyD, 2009).…
