Quote: The bravest of individuals is the one who obeys his or her conscience”–J.F.Clarke

J.F. Clarke once said, “The bravest of individuals is the one who obeys his or her conscience.” I think that what Clarke meant is that people who listen to their heart, people who do what they know or believe to be right, even if everyone else is or would be against them for it, are the bravest people of all. I agree with this quote because it’s usually hard to do the right thing, especially if one has no support. Two books that show this are Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and Lightning by Dean Koontz. In The Crucible, this quote can be seen as true with the character of John Proctor. The story starts with people being accused of committing witchcraft. Many of these people are women. One of these women is Elizabeth Proctor who is John’s wife. She was accused by Abigail Williams, their former servant and the girl with whom Proctor had an affair. Abigail did this because she wanted to get rid of Elizabeth and be with John Proctor. John went to court to try and free his wife. However at court, Proctor ended up confessing his sin of lechery. Proctor had a high name in the village and was greatly respected so the judge and others couldn’t believe it when he confessed. Confessing had cost Proctor his pride. It left him feeling broken. Then, he is accused of being a witch by Mary Warren. At the end of the story, Proctor is given a chance to save himself. By saying that he is a witch and giving other names, he could have saved himself, even though he would have to lie. By sticking to the truth and saying that he is not a witch, he would hang. Proctor is a person with a lot of pride and couldn’t lie. He would rather hang than tell a lie and live. For him, it is morally wrong. He says, that he can’t teach his son to be men or give them a good example if he lies. Telling the truth was morally correct and he stuck with it, even though it

“Truth and Honesty is the oldest and most powerful of all of the human values” (Gary King). Gary King, professor at Harvard University, emphasizes that truth and honesty are an engrained values of human kind. These values are practiced by John Proctor and John Reverend Hale in The Crucible, and by Angela and Sister Gaudentia in article - It’s 2013, And They’re Burning ‘Witches’. John Proctor and Angela do not confess and be honest and truthful. Mr. Hale and Sister Gaudentia help the innocent, accused people against society and they believe that as their responsibility. Demonstrated through The Crucible and It’s 2013, And They’re Burning ‘Witches’, when society pressures the individual to change, an individual maintains his or her own values by being honest, truthful and understand individual’s own responsibility.…

Integrity is achieved through the gaining of wisdom; the gaining of wisdom is a direct result of failure. Arthur Miller wrote the moralizing drama, The Crucible, in this play the main character John Proctor was wrongly accused of witchcraft and served the death penalty along with two others. The story of John Proctor was indirectly summarized by the American author William Saroyan when he said, "Good people...are good because they 've come to wisdom through failure," meaning that a person willing to sacrifice for his beliefs is good because although he has failed, by not according to his moral codes he has gained integrity and the ability to refuse to live a life of hypocrisy; further, John Proctor is good because he died refusing to lie in order to live. Proctor failed because his commitments wavered depending upon his…

In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, the quote is proven true by the use of characterization and conflict. The crucible takes place in Salem, a small town in colonial Massachusetts in the year 1692, during this time the Salem Witch Trials occurs and shows the reader accurately with minor discrepancies how and why the Salem Witch Trials occurred. The Salem Witch Trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. One example that proves this quote true is when Mary Warren states, “I’ll not hang with you! I love God, I love God.” Mary Warren states this when she has accused the girls of lying but can’t prove it, so the pressure by the church officials makes her lie and state that her father made her do the devils work, in which she did not agree to but had no choice. This demonstrates that the quote is true because she not only was fighting the girls which in this instance is the Dragon, but she became the Dragon by lying and telling the church court that the girls were not in fact lying but John Proctor, her father, was making her say these things. She became the Dragon by being what she was fighting against, by lying to the court and becoming one of the girls that accused others of witchcraft. This ultimately led to the death of John Proctor, and the eventual end to the Salem Witch…

Governor Danforth is saying that if Proctor continues to lie, he will be hanged. Communication is a fundamental part of working in a professional environment. Without proper communication, nothing will get done. Outside the Lens is a very collaborative and communicative company as is the work the students the students do at Muirlands, so I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to have good communication and understanding. It’s also important to self-advocate for yourself otherwise you won’t accomplish anything you want. My mentor has always left room for self-advocacy by telling me to let him know if there was anything specific I wanted to learn, or focus on. I’ve felt confident enough to speak up whenever there’s something I want and that’s helped me out while working on my project. While editing I decided I needed more…

In the play The crucible, John Proctor one of the main characters displayed remarkable courage and heroism, John realizes that he must confess his sin of adultery to the courts, only to stop the fury in Salem. After he confesses, he encourages his wife to do the same, "Elizabeth, tell the truth! Elizabeth, I have confessed it!” He confesses his sin, and speaks those words, only because he is looking out for the good of the community, and others around him. He hates that his name is damaged, but feels that God will forgive him for it. Proctor accepted the truth for what it was, not because he had to, but because speaking words of truth are actions of an honest and prideful man, that’s why I consider him as a hero.…

The Crucible shows how important the decision between honesty and protecting one’s name is. By denying her affair, Abigail Williams protected her name, but was dishonest. When Abigail ran away she, once again, protected her name instead of facing the consequences of her actions. When John Proctor chose death, he chose to be honest and protect his name, instead of having to live a life being falsely labeled as a witch. In some situations, like John Proctor’s, you can be honest, and protect your name at the same time, but, a lot of the time, you will be faced with a decision: honesty, or protecting…

J.F. Clarke once stated, “The bravest of individuals is the one who obeys his or her conscience.” To me, this statement means that any individual who follows their conscience, and what they find to be right or wrong, is most brave, or strong, because they step away from society’s opinion and go with their own feelings whether it be what they need or desire. I agree with this statement because I also feel that an individual who listens to their conscience shows bravery. In my opinion someone who follows their conscience rather than society’s standards shows a lot of strength. It takes a lot of character for a person to leave their comfort zone to do the right thing, especially when that person has no support. Two literary works that support my opinion are The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. In both of these literary works the protagonists are faced with life altering decisions where they must make choices and differentiate right from wrong while having no support from other characters.…

John Proctor lost his life because he stayed true to his morals by not lying about using witchcraft. John would not let anybody take his pride. A man is not a man if he goes everyday regretting that he had lied. John Proctor was the type of man who would wake up every morning regretting that he had lied just so he could live. Proctor’s wife Elizabeth knows her husband better than anyone in the town of Salem. As Hale is mad that Proctor ripped the paper, Elizabeth explains to Hale that, “He have his goodness now. God forbid I take it from him” (4,784). She tells Hale that no one can take John’s pride from him.…

Anne Lamott said, “Good literature substitutes for an experience which we have not ourselves lived through.” Good literature allows individuals to live through events which they have not encountered in their lives. I agree with this quote because I believe it is true. This quote is shown to be true through the books, Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. In both pieces of literature, characters had an experience which we haven’t had or been through. Books help us understand the situations that we haven’t faced yet.…

This article, “The RU-486 Abortion Pill Should Be Available to Women”, was written by Laura Fraser in 2001 for the Greenhaven Press. The issue involved with this article is whether or not the RU-486 abortion pill should be available to women in the U.S.. The conclusion Fraser came up with was yes, the RU-486 abortion pill should be available to women in the U.S., and for plenty of reasons. For example, if mifepristone becomes available, it will remove political and practical barriers so women can get abortions and physicians will not have to perform complete abortions. Also, 54% of all…
