Motivation:
Satisfaction of the self-esteem need leads to feelings of self-confidence, worth, strength, capability, and adequacy, of being useful and necessary in the world.
-A. H. Maslow (Motivation and Personality 1954)
I’m led to think of my younger sister when considering the subject of motivation. As with many young teenagers, she’s unashamed that her desire to help someone is most always triggered by what her own personal gain will be. However, her need to achieve being led by her desire to be accepted is reasonably normal according to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. While it may seem enormously important for her to have the latest electronic devises to show off to her friends, it is not exactly what I would describe …show more content…
Therefore, I took my understanding of my sister and her enjoyment of material objects and I devised a plan. She, has a very important biology test, and I have a paper to complete. However, what started as a win-win quickly became bribery-fest 101. I was forced to attain new means of motivation. As a result of my new found understanding of rewards for achievement or the “Do this and you’ll get that” approach (Alfie Kohn: Punished by rewards 1993) I decided to go the direction of expectation rather than reward. According to studies, when you expect a child to succeed academically, they achieve more than they otherwise would have (Froiland, Davison, and Peterson 2013). While advising her of what I expected, I implemented a plan using what Kohn calls the three C’s of motivation (Content, Community, and Choice -ASCD 1995). As a first step I reformed all content needed for her to pass the test by making it interesting and removing material that seemed dull and of no use. Second I created a safe community environment by inviting several of her classmates into the study session. As a third step I assured she understood the reasoning behind passing the test and I offered her the choice to decide how, when, and why she wanted to accomplish the task. In the end taking the steps provided by Kohn did indeed prove successful. Weather this method will last long-term is still to be
