Criticism Of My Body Image
In high school I had a very tough time with my body image. Despite my loving and supportive parents always telling me I was beautiful, I always felt like I needed to be hidden away from the public eye. I took every bit of criticism to heart and let it severely bother me. The people I surrounded myself with could sense my low self-esteem. Being so sensitive to criticism made me a very easy target for bullying. The bullying and criticism eventually took grasp on my mind and made me see everything though a negative way. Many things can cause poor body image in people, things like criticism, attitude, and bullying. Being criticized can make anybody feel bad about themselves, especially if the criticism is coming from their family. Everybody takes things differently. For example, my mom made a comment about how my jeans fit me and I felt so terrible about myself, whereas if this comment was being made towards my brother, it probably would not have phased him. Something small may effect one person worse than it does another person. Making a small comment about what some one looks like or the way they do things can really effect their image on themselves. In today’s society the pressure to feel admired or liked comes with a great amount of criticism. …show more content…

Seeing the glass half empty is a contagious thing, seeing one thing negatively can infect somebody’s whole life and their view on themselves. Choices effect everything. Choosing to have negative people in my life seriously effected my body image. They were not encouraging because all they could focus on was the bad. Luckily, I was raised by parents who taught me that my view on myself was completely up to me. How someone is raised can seriously effect their body image. Growing up with parents who hold high standards and constantly belittle, causes a negative

Hall, a teenage boy named Alexander experiences this moment and decides to make a change. In the world that we live in today, prejudice and stereotyping has a great impact on our perspectives of others. Every day, people are criticized and judged on their appearance based their body weight, their height and the way we look. I myself have also experienced judgement due to my physical appearance. To start, I am taller than most people my age, and it causes people to view me as powerful, athletic and intimidating. Also my thin frame evokes prejudice and leads others to underestimate my abilities; they assume that I am weak. Lastly, people have different first impressions of me based on my tattoo and the way I dress. These physical traits provoke both positive and negative criticism. Ultimately, people do not judge me based on my behaviour and personality, but rather based on the way I present my body and my physical appearance.…

Every time we turn on the television, open a magazine, or scroll through Instagram we are bombarded with images of what the media has deemed beautiful. It is not surprising to see a tall, fit, blonde wearing Guess jeans. Now, there are more diverse people that represent the media. We no longer have a one sided view of beauty. Standing next to Candice Swanepoel are models with curves, short models, and models of color. For example, Winnie Harlow is a high fashion model. She is black, which is one way in which she breaks the standard beauty stereotype, but she also has a condition called Vitiligo. This condition affects one’s skin. It creates patches of skin with the absence of color – the skin looks very white. Another notable person that had…

One factor that can shape one’s body image is culture. Different cultures have different definitions of what they consider beautiful or ugly. For example, a culture would consider a girl with many tattoos as beautiful which could then bring about a positive body image. On the other hand, other cultures would label women with tattoos as impure. Another factor would be the influence of the media on body image. It can either heighten positive body image or aggravate it. Standards of beauty are often defined by what we see on magazines and televisions. People are often exposed to images of “perfection” that it sends messages that this is how men and women should look. The pressure to achieve “physical perfection” causes people to be…

One reason girls experience negative body image is because they are shaped by social media. All of these images, whether they are represented in a magazine or posted on Instagram, resemble toothpick thin models that we consider ‘perfect.’ Many young women consider them their role models. That being said, what most people still don’t realize is that majority of the pictures shown in magazines such as Glamour magazine, or Seventeen, have been photoshopped or altered to make the appearance of models thinner. In a TED Talk, Chawisa Staman talks about how to overcome the ideals of becoming ‘perfect.’ When covering the topic of advertisements she states, “Are you aware that 99.9% of those were photoshopped” (TEDTalks 1:22). The women in the photos…

Body image dissatisfaction is a concept that refers to a person's negative perception of his or her own physical appearance. The negative view of the body have generally been seen as a female problem but body dissatisfaction is also very much tied to the male body image as well. The media strongly influences the way males in society perceive their own bodies by promoting the ideal male body image.Although I recognize that my own body is a product of my inability to work out and take care of myself I feel like society has created this subtle image of the perfect male body that all men must live up to in some way. When look at my body get the overwhelming feeling that men must have muscles and I tend to look at my body and compare to more fit men. Unlike women, men want all body parts bigger rather than only losing weight. Male bodies are supposed to be strong firm you have to have a six pack and a tall build and be either smooth or look like a lumberjack. My body, however, is in an awkward place where its soft, smooth, and scrawny. The way I look my body is the way world around me had conditioned me to see. Movies and Television have reinforced a certain ideal image of the perfect body. For example, recent movies such as the Fifty Shades of Grey series have shown that girls will be attracted to you as long you're tall, muscular, aggressive and rich. Although there definitely wide range factors that attract women it all ties back to the idea that males need to have a certain body image and personality to get the girl and gain the respect of their peers. Also, it is not just the way in which a man looks but the size of the man that is also a big factor in society. Short men generally are seen as unattractive to women in society. Although I would consider myself slightly above average height at around six feet tall a good portion of my younger years was spent being one…

The mirror can be your friend or your enemy. I considered it my worst enemy because I had to look at something I feared: I had to face myself at my worst physical shape. I had what was called "man boobies": they were the worst part of being overweight, followed by my chubby face. Sometimes I would wear several layers of thick clothes to cover my "man boobies," even if the weather was hot. That is how much I hated my body. But what is funny is that I did not feel this way about myself until I moved to California five years ago. Now, I live in a world that favors the slim, athletic body. That world did not help, instead that world made me feel unpleasant feelings such as anger towards myself and jealousy towards others who were in better shape than I was. Brained-washed by television and magazines to…
