The research study regarding big data and data science in nursing is a qualitative perspective study that uses an investigational approach. There are a couple of points that make it clear that this article is a qualitative study. The first thing is that fact that numbers, statistics, and figures are not analyzed. The second thing that screams qualitative is the fact that it is based on theory. The researchers, Patricia Brennan and Suzanne Bakken, are well credentialed and do seem to be qualified researchers. Both authors hold a doctorate degree and are fellows of the American Academy …show more content…
Brennan and Bakken point out that racial and ethnic minorities are not well represented in clinical research studies, biorepositories, health-related uses on the internet, or some mobile apps. The authors did reference a study which involved investigating the aforementioned issues in a Latino community. The theoretical framework for this research study was an investigative & theoretical approach that analyzes experiential observations and reflections. The specific type of theory that was used in this particular article was the familiar-to-nursing theory-driven approach. This is part of the research theory framework that can be used in the field of nursing. This research study did include some operational terms that were appropriate to the research study. Some of these terms included big data, data sciences, variety, velocity, veracity, value, schema on read, and schema on write. These terms are appropriate because they directly relate to what is being analyzed and investigated. I feel like the author did clearly defined all eight of the operational terms I mentioned which allowed for clarity in the study. By providing clear, simple definitions of these operational terms, it allows the readers to easily comprehend the …show more content…
There was one bias present that the authors pointed out regarding racial and ethnic minorities in general. The authors allude to the fact that these minorities are not well represented in clinical research. This bias does not pertain to this study in particular, rather research in general. I did not recognize that any particular sample size was mentioned our outlined in this article. The authors reviewed 30 references, which seem to be an adequate review of references for this topic. The study does not mention being funded by any one person or any specific organization, therefore there was no conflict of interest identified. The primary method of data collection for this article was investigational. The authors explored big data initiatives and investigate exemplars of nursing informatics research to compile where nursing is currently in with big data and the possibilities the nursing field has.
This research study was significant to the field of nursing. This article was attempting to outline why the nursing field needs big data and data science while also advocating that big data still needs improvement and has a long ways to come in the current nursing world. The authors did a good job of pointing out how modern nursing and big data are really interrelated. I did not see any assumptions mentioned by the author. I did not recognize any limitations to this
