Cross-Cultural Perspectives We all know of McDonald’s a being one of the biggest, popular, and best food chain restaurant around the world. The fast food chain was started in 1955 by Ray Kroch in California. The restaurant took pride in providing hot French fries, delicious hamburgers, and their speedy drive-thru service. The fast food chain started with one small restaurant and got restaurants all over the US and other countries. McDonald’s main mission is to keep serving a budget and healthier friendly menu. The restaurant chain has over 30,000, and that is in a least 100 overseas locations. McDonald’s as a fast food chains earns more than a billions …show more content…
of dollars annually, but they have some major issues with their overseas locations (McDonald’s, 2011). The first overseas McDonald’s was started in 1971 in Japan (McDonald’s, 2011) and because of the differences in their cultures and the cultures in the US there were some major problems. The first problem was the difference in the way they prepared their foods, another problem as how they organized their foods and the other problem that they had was the speed in service. With all their differences in cultures and ethics they had to come up with a way to do business together. With others expanding their business to the overseas market they took a different approach than McDonald’s to be able to work together with their differences not causing a big problem.
Preparing cooked food at home is the something the Japanese are known for doing. Not for just preparing their food at home the Japanese are also known for the way they organized their meals too. They are welled known for preparing their young preschool children lunches in a box that they call Obentos. The way the lunches were made in a certain way it was behind the starting of what is known in the restaurants as carryout. Because in the Japanese culture food represents a person place in society it has more meaning than what is does in the US. In Japan women are in charge of the making of all food, and with the belief and the traditions that women did all the cooking of the food that it was one of the major problems that the McDonald’s and the Japanese (Megan, 2009). The problem was started because McDonald’s did not agree with Japans traditions, and that caused the Japanese to judge and to glare upon the franchise. At the Japanese locations you only get the food that was offered in America not what the Japanese was use too. The Japanese had to make some major changes in how they did things they started to add some of their foods that people were more accustom to their menus. They started offering an egg that was fried burger, fried rice, and something that was called curried chicken that was served over white rice (2009), which showed that even overseas they cared about making customers and keeping them coming back for their food. The issues that McDonald’s had with Japan was not just with the difference with the taste of their food and the way it was prepared, but it was also a problem because McDonald’s was taking away their family time and they were not getting a chance to set at a table a as a family to eat.
This was their opportunity for togetherness as a community united as one. They saw it as a way for people to get to know one another, a way to keep their families as one, and a way for them is around each to communicate. So with the McDonald’s first overseas restaurant not offering somewhere it sit and just a counter that was a very big issue for them (Megan, 2009). To take care of this problem McDonald’s offered a friendlier and homer place to eat and brought in tables and chairs. That also showed that McDonald’s was all about making and keeping their customers happy and coming back (Megan, …show more content…
2009).
The Japanese thought that McDonald’s was coming on strong with their ethical viewpoint and thought it was necessary to stay true to themselves and not give in the peer pressure, and to continue to do conduct business like they had. Both McDonald’s and the Japanese thought it was important to changes their customs and beliefs. With them both giving in it showed that globally the importance of each ones responsibility socially. It let you see that by working together a difference can be made, and that let people see that making some changes for the Japanese restaurants that McDonald’s as an organization has a strong ethics value.
As you can see that McDonald’s is very successful and has a lot of restaurants not only in Japan, but other countries overseas too with Europe having the most with a total of 6,400 different locations.
The restaurants that are located in Europe makes the most money, but the US is not far behind in sales with that being said in 2007 the restaurants in Europe alone made close to nine billion dollars. McDonald’s is still the biggest chain of successful restaurants in the world and they have starting more and more restaurants globally. There are also a lot of McDonald’s chains that are privately owned that are huge successes too. It makes me want to go out and buy my own
franchise. With McDonald’s being one of the biggest restaurant franchise ever they see and go through many cultural differences and blows, and never let a difficult situation get them down. They always want to keep their customers happy and coming back for their hot and delicious food. To make sure their customers are happy they want to make any changes that are needed in the different countries that they have a location and that means if they need to provide difference foods and a different atmosphere that they are willing to do so, as you saw Japan they catered to their customers and provided them with food that they were used to, and a family environment. Food for the Japanese culture stands for their strong morals and ethics (Megan, 2009) and McDonald’s will keep on trying to exceed their customers experience if it’s in the US or at one of the many overseas location you will see that making the customer happy and keeping their morals and ethics is all they want to do and that will always make McDonald’s a successful as a restaurant.
