History of my family and our experiences in Canada

Rafida Sayed.

History 30
Period: 1
Mr.Mirwald

I was born in Bangladesh. As a Bengali citizen, I know very little about my country. According to my father and my grandfather, I now know a lot about my homeland, Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is in southern Asia, bordering the Bay of Bengal, between Burma and India. We have mid winter, hot, humid, and warm rainy monsoon. Bangladesh is composed of 98% Muslims and others are Non- Bengali Muslims and tribal groups.ⁱ Bangladesh is a Hierarchical society. People are respected for their age (referred to elders) and for High status. Planning and decisions are always done by the male rather than Women.ⁱ
My first generation was at the time of my great, great grandfather. It was around at the 1600’s. At that time we had one country and that was Bharat; in other word it was India (It were mixture of Bangladesh, Pakistan, India and Marimba). My great , great grandfathers , “ Kamor Uddin Molla”, and “ Noor Miha Molla” were Bharati at that time.² British ruled in India from 1600-1947. They conquered our land, mainly because of two reasons. First Portugal was losing control of the East Indian Spice Trade; British got an opportunity to share the trade and they send many ships to India. However, Dutch had also controlled the spice trade, later they rebuffed any British efforts to take part in it. British then gained the right to set up trading posts along the coast of India.³
British took over the land and were controlling the whole Bharat (India) nation. They gave less money to the people. It was a torturing period of time. Noor Miha Molla had a lot of children. One of them “Omar Ali Molla” died during the Second World War. Poverty was a great disaster at that time. People survived in a very hard way. According to some people, British ruled for hundred years in our country. After that they left us and separated every country based on similar religion. Pakistan was combined

The British East India company held India in its grasp until the Sepoy Rebellion in 1857 happened. Because of the rebellion England decided to take more control over the colony by having the actual government take root and complete control in 1857. “Guilt is the hilt of the knife that we use on ourselves, and love is often the blade; but it's worry that keeps the knife sharp, and worry that gets most of us, in the end” (G. Roberts).Guilt is the strongest and most corrosive of feelings. Like acid, it can eat away at your insides and render you numb, just like it did to Kate. In the novel Crow Lake by Mary Lawson, the theme of guilt has a persistent presence and impact on Kate, Luke and Matt.…

    Crow Lake- Education

Education. A word that resonates differently with everyone, but resonates deeply nonetheless. To some it is seen as a means to maintain their current, comfortable lifestyle where to others it is seen as nothing more than a waste of time and yet to others still it opens the door to numerous opportunities for a better life. On the most part though, our society as a whole seems to agree that education is the pathway to success. Not coincidentally, this is also the stance taken by most authors in modern day literature. This theme of education is clearly presented within two completely different texts: Mary Lawson’s Crow Lake, and David Auburn’s Proof, though not necessarily in the most traditional sense of the word. The characters in both texts are greatly influenced by education, both formal and informal, which in turn, becomes a key element in their overall success.…

British Imperialism was a large factor in the development of India both technologically and socially. The main reason that the British Imperialism has had such a large effect on the Indian way of life was because it lasted 190 years. Such a long direct and indirect rule impacted India's development immensely, with the occupation ranging from the oppressive company rule to the British monarchy. The imperialism of India had many negative effects on the nation. Indian culture was lost, people were repressed, and the social order was completely destroyed. However; there were also many good outcomes. This boost in resources allowed Britain colonies to contribute to fixing India as a whole and make their economy stronger. This also, eventually freed…

Historically, Bangladesh has earned the reputation of being at the crossroads of many cultures. The ruins of magnificent cities and monuments left behind in many parts of the country by the vanishing dynasties of rulers still bear testimony to the richness of its cultural heritage. Bangladesh has always been known as a land full of nature’s bounties as evident from the vast expanses of its lush crop fields, borderland hills thickly covered with virgin forests and innumerable rivers and their tributaries, making it the world’s largest delta. Ancient chroniclers have described it as “a land of emerald and silver”, “a garden fit for kings”, or as “a paradise among countries”. It is no wonder then that this country has always attracted settlers, traders, and conquerors who turned the land into a vast melting pot of diverse races and cultures.…
