Crucible Essay
Abigail Williams is supposed to be a Puritan in the Puritan society. In the Crucible many people think that her character is a victim of the Puritan society against which she rebels. But she is also was the one lying about witchcraft, having people murdered for no in particular reason. I find that she is not a victim, in puritan society .I think she is just a negative icon in the puritan society that shows you all people are not who they seem. In Act one, she wanted to put a curse on Elizabeth Proctor, because she wanted to be with her husband John Proctor. She and many other girls around the same age were in the woods dancing and chanting, one of them being naked, which is frowned upon in the Puritan society. Abigail Williams then drank blood as her uncle walked up on them while they all ran away. Through the next day’s things went wrong and started lying to her uncle and everyone else about witches. She says to the girls “Let either of you breath a word, or the edge of a word about the other things, and i will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you.” That shows you that she is a mean girl who thinks of nothing but herself.
Abigail Williams had a way of manipulating people to believe whatever she said. She was very vain and in Act one she shows that when she says, “You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet!” It indicates to the audience the desire that Abigail feels towards Proctor and her determination to see it play out the way she wants it to. She wanted everything o go her way so when it was not, during act 3 she robs her own uncle and leaves town without a word. It shows the audience that she is clearly not a victim of Puritan society.
