Crucifixion of Jesus Christ Crucifixion is the execution of a person by nailing or binding them to a cross. Hans Hofmann once said “through a painting, we can see the whole world”. The paintings Deposition by Caravaggio and Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Giotto, share the theme of the aftermath of the crucifixion of Jesus, but differ in the use of lighting, colors and lines. Lamentation of the dead Christ, is a 13th century renaissance fresco painting by Giotto Di Bondone. The painting shows the angels, Christ’s body, and the supporters of Christ. Giotto portrayed the emotions by the placement of the figures in is painting to draw the attention to the main idea of his painting. To the extent of what he was wanting his audience to actually focus on. In this painting, the mountain in the background going down in a left downward diagonal line draws focus to Mary holding the dead Christ in her arms. The degree of sorrow of each individual is (see fig.1) shown on the figures in the painting by their gestures. For example, the Baptist seems to be throwing his arms up in the air in despair after seeing Christ dead. This had enhanced just how extreme and painful Lamentation really was.
In his painting, the background is set at complete darkness to show the grieving and all the emotional suffering that was occurring. There are six figures being showed coming down diagonally to show Jesus Christ being held right before his tomb. (see fig. 2) This painting is very dramatic, and by the way each character is placed suffering is taking place. With the amount of light that is showing on Christ’s arm, the artist is trying to tell you that Christ is no longer in pain or suffering, while the others mourn his
