Holy Sacrament And School Of Athens Comparison
The paintings, School of Athens and Disputation of the Holy Sacrament, by Raphael are similar in style and other elements but also different from each other. These two paintings are both by Raphael the Italian Renaissance artist. Also both of these paintings are frescos. A fresco is large mural painting done directly onto the plaster. The painting becomes a part of the wall. Both are located in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican City. These two paintings are actually in the same room, the Stanza della Segnatura, or the room of signature. The two paintings were done only approximately a year apart one being completed in 1509 and the other in 1510 on opposite walls in the room. However, the content of the paintings are different. Both use a lot of white throughout in the marble structures and clouds of the paintings. The people in both of the paintings are wearing more vivid colors such as blues, greens, reds, and yellows. Also is both paintings the light blue sky is seen in the background and the brightens up the picture. Both pictures are also fairly symmetrical because if someone was to divide the painting vertically in half both sides would have roughly the same amount of people on each side and has symmetrical architecture on either side. One side is not favored over another and are equally busy. The scale and proportion in both works of art are the same. The paintings are as life like as possible. All of the people are proportional to each other. The only figure that stands on is, in the Disputation of the Holy Sacrament Jesus is slightly larger than the rest of the people. I believe this was done to represent him as the all powerful God. Jesus is also emphasized because he seems to be glowing and looks very pure and holy. There is a lot of variety in both of these paintings the business of all of the people and things going on gives it variation. However, this variation is done throughout the entire painting and this gives both of the paintings unity and

In comparison both works of art are religious traditional works of art that illustrate the Crucifixion. Similarly, they were devotional works of art to aid in prayer. In both works of art the message is equivalent; that you will have redemption and be saved through Christ. The depictions of the Virgin Mary parallel each other in that she is shown mournful and in despair, and John the Evangelist is present and by her side in both pieces. Both works tell a story of the sacred truth as the teachings of the Catholic Church.…

The Stanza della Segnatura contained apartments for Pope Julius II, who commissioned Raphael to paint them. Vatican patrons say, “The Stanza della Segnatura was to be Julius' library, Bibiotheca Iulia, which would house a small collection of books intended for his personal use.” The frescoes depict four themes, Philosophy, Theology, Poetry and Law. All of the frescoes show heavy influence from his predecessors as well as his contemporaries. Raphael learned much from his travels around Italy and from studying with his master Perugino in his native town of Urbino. From Perugino, he learned oil painting and how to manipulate figures. Raphael’s earliest intact altarpiece, the Mond Crucifixion, “is remarkably close to Perugino, in the lightly posed figures, which are meek and decorous in gesture and sweet in expression, in its linear elegance and atmospheric distant hills, which are bare but for soft clumps and individual trees as light as columns of smoke. All details of the formal language—crooked little fingers, solid scaly wings, hooked drapery folds—derive from Perugino, and Raphael also imitated Perugino’s technique of painting, largely in an oil medium.”…

The School of Athens by Raphael is a complex painting with a fascinating composition. The subjects, building, composition and his use of color make it a compelling piece. This painting is extremely decorative and complex. With various tools, Raphael was able to emphasize different aspects and pull the viewer into the work. Because of the colors used in the painting, and the setting, this painting seems to be of religious or educated figures.…

In the Proto Renaissance era, also known as the era before the renaissance, the most usual form of art was a style was one which closely resembled Byzantine Christian artwork. Through research, I found a definition for this style of artwork. A website called Britannica described Byzantine Christian art in way that was easy for me to understand, it was defined as “Based on the dynamic of lines and flat areas of color rather than form,” (Britannica, Byzantine Christian par.5). This style of work is the very basis of comparison of Cimabue’s work and the work of his student Giotto. The paintings in question for comparison are “Madonna Enthroned with Angels and Profits” or “Santa Trinita Madonna,” by Cimabue, and “Ognissanti Madonna,” by Giotto.…

As implied before form is also present in both works, as the use of different value in the negative and positive areas create a sense of the drawings being three dimensional. The artist has also used texture in both work, however the type of texture he used isn’t the same. The texture of the drawing is rough, as a large number of contour lines are present. While the texture of the painting is mostly smooth as there are no contour lines. The artist has also emphasised certain areas of both artwork through the use of contrast.…

We also have multiple figures in different poses, with Mary (identifiable by her halo) facing us as she points to Christ. We have themes of christianity, with the Father (God behind Christ), the Son (Christ crucified) and the Holy Spirit (Dove above Christ) all being depicted along with Mary, Joseph and devoters on the side. We see that the coffers behind God and Christ act as the orthogonals leading down to the transversal, the line at the bottom of the cross. The coffers are done in a one-point perspective to give depth and add the optical illusion of space while bringing more attention to the main subject, the holy trinity of father, son and holy spirit. We see emphasis on Christ’s body structure, which allows us to almost feel the actual pain of him being hanged by his own body weight. We see latin words on the bottom above a skeleton, which tells us that death is unavoidable, and that we will all become the skeleton one day. I believe that Alberti would praise this work even though some of the bodies are posed similarly because of all the detail within the architecture, the one point perspective illusion of depth and space, and because of the subject…
