The Birth Of Venus By Sandro Botticelli
"The Birth of Venus" is a famous painting created by Sandro Botticelli between the years 1482 and 1485. The painting is inspired by Roman and Greek Mythology. The painting shows a naked young woman with long red hair standing on a massive seashell. The girl standing on the shell is mostly likely Venus, the goddess of love. This is because she is the focal point of the painting. To the right of Venus is another young lady draped in a billowing white gown and she is holding a red blanket. The maiden's gown has some simple floral designs on it. To the left of Venus is a man with angel wings holding a woman while hovering over the water approaching Venus. The couple is intertwined with a long blue piece of cloth. The colors used in this painting …show more content…
However, the painting does leave a lot to the imagination. Venus is standing on an unusually massive seashell that appears to have ''risen'' up from the ocean. This makes it seem like Venus has risen up out of the ocean on this shell. She is also naked which makes since for someone who had just been created because people are not born wearing clothing. However, it is odd that she is a full grown woman instead of a child. It seems that the young lady to the right of her was almost expecting her arrival and is holding a red blanket to cover Venus's naked body. While to the left of her are two angels that are tossing up flowers almost as if they are celebrating her arrival. The lighting in the painting is bright and happy as if nature its self is welcoming Venus. Even angels have appeared to welcome her arrival. There is a male and female angel intertwined with each other throwing little pink …show more content…
Some good comparisons are Primavera, which was also done by Botticelli. This painting was done very similar to The birth of Venus because all of the women in the painting have long red hair. Most of the women are wearing very sheer gowns. The same maiden that is in The Birth of Venus painting is also in Primavera, wearing the same gown. The women holding the red blanket looks like she might be Venus. She also appears to be the focal point in Primavera. This painting also has nude angels in it. The women in both of the painting's have very fair skin. Another painting that is similar to The Birth of Venus is The Creation of Adam created by Michelangelo Buonarroti in the year of 1512. Both of these paintings have goddesses in them and have a very magical "feel." Of course, the people are also naked like Venus is in Botticelli painting. However one of the main differences is that the focal point in Michelangelo's painting is two males instead of a female. Both of the paintings use very dull washed out

What struck me when I first saw this painting, other than the pretty flower garland, is how brightly illuminated she was. Her porcelain skin is highlighted as if the sun or some form of light shines down on her. This is in contrast to everything else being much darker. The contrast between her bright aura and the dark surroundings could the author’s way of symbolizing Madame de Thorigny’s status and wealth. It could also be a way of emphasizing her being the focal point of the painting. I noticed her gaze…

The Birth of Venus was the first big painting done on a canvas during the Renaissance in Florence. Botticelli made his own pigments which added a lot of brightness and to his paintings. This made his canvas painting have the freshness of frescoes. The proportions of the figures show exaggeration which makes the painting look mythical (“Birth of Venus”)…

There are many differences between Northern renaissance art and Italian renaissance art. They are quite different. While Italian renaissance art tended to show the body in an idealistic way, Northern renaissance art hid the body. The art was very realistic, but drapery hid the body in a medieval fashion. That makes one major difference between the two: Italian was classical and Northern was medieval. Northern art had an immense amount of symbols in it. A good example of Northern art is the Merode Altarpiece, painted by Robert Campin in 1425-1428. In this piece, there is an incredible amount of symbolism, it is painted in a medieval style (drapery hides the body, etc.), there’s a tremendous amount of detail put into it, and perhaps one of the most defining features of it is that it has got the patron in it. Since it was commissioned by someone besides the church, they wanted to be put in the piece of art that they paid to be painted. The patrons of the altarpiece appear on the far left side, as if they were part of the scene itself. Now we have Italian renaissance art. Some defining characteristics of it are that it is very classical (drapery tends to cling to the body, revealing the perfection of all the idealized bodies), they used plenty of linear perspective (whereas Northern art was more medieval, so they didn’t much care for that), they liked using illusions in their work, and they didn’t have patrons in their work because the church usually commissioned all the art. Botticelli’s Birth of Venus is a good example of Italian renaissance art. It not only has tons of drapery clinging to the female’s bodies, but it also has a nude person, common in classical art. This piece shows no particular patron, and so we can assume that it was commissioned by the church.…

The piece that I chose to write about is entitled The Birth of Venus and was painted by the French artist Nicolas Poussin. This painting was sold to Catherine the Great of Russia in 1771. It was sold another time by the Hermitage Museum in 1932 when the Soviet government was desperate for western currency. It was then that it was acquired for the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The painting was made in Italy in either the year 1635 or 1636. The medium that Poussin used was oils on canvas, and the size of the painting is roughly around 38 by 42 inches. This painting is considered to be included the Baroque period. (Philadelphia Museum of Art) Along side of the painting on display is a short description label accompanying it, which reads;…

Diego Velazquez was one of the most important painters of this time; he worked for King Philip IV. He was well-known for his detailed portrait paintings and he later influenced the artwork of the realist and the impressionist artists in Europe. “Venus at her Mirror” is a painting created by Diego Velazquez of the goddess Venus. Mainly influenced by the Titian’s “Venus of Urbino”, he painted her lying in a bed in a particularly sensual pose (1). Although this is a physically impossible position because of the angle she forms with her reflection, she is looking at herself in a mirror held by Cupid, her son the god of love. He is not painted as usual, with a bow and an arrow; instead, Diego Velazquez painted a ribbon that is supposed to represent a chain to bind the lovers. The composition was painted between 1647 and 1651 in canvas and oil. Although this painting might seem classical and run-of-the mill, it is actually this first nude painting to be created. During this time, nudes were extremely unusual because of the Spanish Inquisition. This composition utilizes shades of red, white and grey. The purpose of this painting, probably is not to represent a female nude or a portrait of Venus, it may be to symbolize self-absorbed beauty. Because the goddess has no other purpose in the painting than denote gorgeousness (2).…

Some objects in the painting are a pregnant woman, a burning candle, a skull, and a cross lying on the table under some books. The way the woman’s head is rested on her hand and she is staring into the candle light, shows that she is in deep thought. I believe that the woman is reflecting upon her life. She looks to be pregnant, which represents life. The unity of…

It was hard to understand exactly what was going on in this painting at first. It took me a couple of glances to put together the little I actually understood, the rest I got from hours of research and bewilderment. Venus, as she sits on the stain blue cloth, is wearing a cloth around her midriff. This cloth, I found, is called a diaphanous stophein, which is the times of Lotto, was worn by new brides. The tiara she wears on her head with the white veil draped down her back is symbolizing a practice that continues today. A woman’s wedding day is her day to be a princess and the veil symbolizes the innocence of a woman to be married. The brown conch shell hanging above…

The Venus figurines are thought to symbolize many different things. The most popular idea the figurines are thought to represent in fertility. Tying in with that, it is thought to shown the stages of a woman’s life: pubescence, pregnancy, childbirth, and the obesity of later life. Other theories are that they were religious symbols, sex symbols for men, or even self-portraits of women taken from a distorted perspective.…

Both paintings were painted in the Renaissance, although the Birth of Venus was painted in the Early Renaissance and Venus of Urbino was created in the High Renaissance. Venus is said to be the goddess of love, sex, beauty and fertility. She was also the first non-Biblical female nude painted. One painting shows the story of how Venus was created and the other uses symbolism to create an allegory of marriage. Both paintings use chiaroscuro, which was used in oil painting during the High Renaissance, to contrast between light and dark to shape figures. In The Venus of Urbino, Venus is staring right at the viewer, while in The Birth of Venus, Venus is looking off to the side. The direct eye contact is used to symbolize confidence and sensuality while as in the other painting Venus is almost ashamed to be naked so she is trying to cover herself in modesty. In The Birth of Venus, there are bright and vivid colors, common in the High Renaissance. In The Venus of Urbino, dull tones are used to highlight the body of Venus. Both paintings utilize light and dark contrast as shown that Venus’ body is illuminated and very light due to her fair complexion and the surroundings are darker in color. In The Venus of Urbino, there is little movement because she is laying down, which is the complete opposite of The Birth of Venus where movement is very evident because she is standing on a seashell. The mood in the Birth of…

When first observing the art piece, the viewer notices that the woman on the seashell is Venus, the main focus of the painting. Botticelli included certain allegories when painting Venus standing nude on a seashell. Knowing that Venus was born out of the sea, her standing on a seashell symbolizes that she has just emerged from the water. Some may think that Venus is the goddess of the sea because she was born in the sea; this is false. Venus standing naked actually indicates that Venus is the goddess of beauty; this is evident through the perfection of her features.…
