Leading Lines

Leading lines are present in the drawing as the drawing of the road is the first part of the drawing that catches the audience’s eyes due to it being smooth. It is smooth as contour lines aren’t present there, therefore the smooth surface contrasts against the rest of the parts of the drawing in the foreground and middle ground. Then through the long road, the audience's eyes are directed towards the trees, then towards what appears to be a body of water. Then the leading line continues to the buildings and the tall tower with a pointed top on the background. For example movement is present in both artworks as previously mentioned, the artist has used leading lines in the work, which directs the audience's eyes. Lines are also present in both artworks, however the thickness of the lines present is different. The lines used in the drawing are quite thin, for example the bottom of the tree. While, the lines used in the painting are thicks, like the sticks drawn on the ground which is on the foreground. The thickness may have been different due to the material used, as pencils are much thinner than brushes. As implied before form is also present in both works, as the use of different value in the negative and positive areas create a sense of the drawings being three dimensional. The artist has also used texture in both work, however the type of texture he used isn’t the same. The texture of the drawing is rough, as a large number of contour lines are present. While the texture of the painting is mostly smooth as there are no contour lines. The artist has also emphasised certain areas of both artwork through the use of contrast. For example the building on the right side of the paper is much darker when compared to the rest of the drawing on the page, therefore it’s light value makes the building contrast against the background and things around it. Emphasis on the painting is applied on the body of the water, this is because the colour used to paint that area is much brighter and lighter when compared to the objects around it. Therefore the body of water contrasts against the dark areas around it. Space is also used in both artworks, as both have clear a foreground, middleground, and background. This gives a clear sense of perspective. Proportion also relates to the spacing used in both works, as the proportion of the objects in the artworks are bigger or smaller compared to how close they are to the
