Regatta At Cowes By Raoul Dufy
The artwork that I chose is the Regatta at Cowes by Raoul Dufy. Painted in 1934, this oil on linen measures up to 32 1/8 X 39 1/2 and can be seen at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC My initial reaction to the painting put me in awe of the colors. It made me feel calm and relaxed. I imagined myself on one of the sailboats enjoying the serenity of the lake. The style of this painting is abstract with simplified and exaggerated aspects. The water and sailboats have all been simplified. The boats that are closer to the front of the painting have been exaggerated more than the others in the distance. There are many horizontal lines within the painting created with the hard, exaggerated brush strokes in the water. These lines are …show more content…
There are a number of different hues of blue used in the body of water and also white highlights. The white highlights give implied light since there is no actual light source. Many of the darker hues are behind the boats, creating shadows on the water. The painting mostly consists of primary colors, red, yellow, and blue. Green and orange, secondary colors, can also be seen within the painting. There is an overpowering use of cool colors in the painting as the different shades of blue in the water control the overall mood of the painting. The bits of green used in some flags, boats and an area of the water to the right of the painting help to keep that coolness. The use of the warm red, yellow, and orange colors help to warm up the painting just a bit by adding a bit of “pop” to it. All of the warm colors are very intense and appear to be pure. The monochromatic harmony of the blue water has different levels of intensity as the dark blue has a lower intensity. None of the blues appear to be pure. The lighter blue that was mixed with white has also been dulled to lower its intensity and create value. The warm colors help to immediately draw my eyes into the painting. My eyes move and dance around the painting from left to right with the movement created by the strokes of the water and also the different warm colors in small doses around the painting within the boats and flags. My eyes are also taken around the

The dominant colors are sea blue, a tint of gray, and within the cracks, a soft gold. Only a few soft colors are being used, therefore creating a muted piece of art. There is a certain sense of harmony in the vessel because the gold and the grayish-blue combine well together forming a balance that does not allow one color to show more vividly than another.…

Marks use of monochrome blue is what really drew me to this piece. By using only blue I believe Mark has perfectly reflected the mood and atmosphere of the situation through the use of color. The blues seen in the painting are mostly deep or dark blues with the only lighter softer blues seen in the calm waters of the lily pond. Even in the water we see the reflection of the dark clouds above…

all the colours in this painting are cool. The painting also has a blue green colour scheme with red as an accent colour. These dullness and coolness of these colours make the setting seem like early morning. This use of colour makes the violent act happening in the painting seem normal because the colours make it seem like a normal day. The red acts as an disturbance to the peacefulness of the blue and green hues.…

I believe the bright colors are making a statement to emphasize on the major parts of the artwork. Showing the motion, makes you move your eyes along the imaginary wave. The slight tone of yellow makes me think of the sun come through the wave. The soft light of the off white background makes me think of a light blue sky that is clear of everything. Vague colors made me stare at the picture for long periods of time so that way I could understand why he created this on in particular. I thought maybe like times when he got bored and went to the museum; he created a scene of his bus ride there. Maybe he pictures himself at a beach and what it would be like to sit and watch someone ride a…

Fishes are orange and white while the nest is light brown. Two fishes are different by one fishes has blue spots while another has a golden tone. The colors of the eggs are different in each nest. The left nest has grey eggs. The middle nest contains blue eggs. The right nest’s eggs are gold. The nests are curvy by the bent thin lines. The fishes are smooth and curvy shapes. The subjects in the painting are organic shapes opposed to geometric because they show how the organisms and nests appear in real life. The fishes are detailed by having think lines on their skins to show the scales as texture. The painter faded the bottom of the painting grey to display a sense of ground while the upper right corner had grey to show that the painting is taking place in a room. The composition of the paining is set-up as a rising perspective because the eye goes from the nest to the fish when staring at the artwork. The content of the painting is fantasy because the fishes are floating above the nests. It…
