Mark Bradford's 'When We Ride'
. Mark Bradford was the artist that I took a look at. His creativity was wonderful abstract, catching my eye piece after piece. The particular artwork that I looked at was his “When We Ride” created in 2006. The media is a mix, which was created into a collage on canvas. The canvas was at its large of 46 3/8 x 62 ¼ inches. This piece of artwork is located in the city of art itself; Los Angeles, California. I believe this canvas collage tells an untold story through contrast and rhythm, light and color, and texture. As a child Mark Bradford had known his mother and grandmother to be creators. He called them creators because as a job title they were seamstresses. The ability to make things, new things at that for people was the motivation and process of making things. The contrast of the objects used on the collage is weird because he just used scraps that were lying around the house. The contrast was the placing of fabrics next to a different color and flow of the piece was in amazing. It made me think of rhythm that is somehow missing but never seems to finds its own way. The fact he put two different pieces of fabric next to each …show more content…
I believe the bright colors are making a statement to emphasize on the major parts of the artwork. Showing the motion, makes you move your eyes along the imaginary wave. The slight tone of yellow makes me think of the sun come through the wave. The soft light of the off white background makes me think of a light blue sky that is clear of everything. Vague colors made me stare at the picture for long periods of time so that way I could understand why he created this on in particular. I thought maybe like times when he got bored and went to the museum; he created a scene of his bus ride there. Maybe he pictures himself at a beach and what it would be like to sit and watch someone ride a

The variation of colors he used created an outstanding display of nature that I never thought possible. I believe his purpose was to create imagery, an illusion to the audience, as if they were looking into the American West, through his painting. The entity of light was the key element of this painting. The form of a fine white line amid a mass of water allowed the separation of the earth and the heavens. What is intriguing about the painting is that as quickly as the earth and heaves were separated, the two joined once again at the same location. The reflection of the lake elaborated on the purity of the water and the richness of life. The contrast of dark and light colors served a great importance in his painting.…

The Great Wave off Kanagawa has several elements in this masterpiece. For example, how vessel ships lines up with the waves making the vessels appear to be flowing with the high tide waves. The painting “The Great Wave of Kanagawa” is a great example of line. This painting has very bold, emphasized lines that help to define the water from the sky. As well within the water, the line helps to determine the different part of the water, the foam, or the curves of the waves. Hokusai makes it very easy for one’s eyes to follow the moving of the water. Also, how Mt. Fuji in the distance looks like it could be part of the wave too. This was very clever of the artist to give the impression that all the triangular shapes appear to be the waves themselves. In order for the artist to make this impression, he used light blues along with dark blues for the waves depicted in the drawing. The light blues represent a higher tide and the dark blue the sea. The artist simplified the waves to an array of flat patterns with a black outlining for more intensity. The drawing depicts vessels that are probably carrying food and supplies this was especially relevant back in the 1800s. It is hard to tell what time of day that the drawing possibly could have been created, but I am going to assume during the day giving the light blue hues and how one can…

He used different materials such as fabric, magazines and newspapers blended with paint to create semi-abstract collages. His style was inspired by Cubism. “Bearden arranged his collages on paper or board and then glued them down” (National Gallery of Art). Most of his work depicts a story about African-American life and/or culture. “His works’ complexity lies in their poetic abstraction, in which layered fragments of color and pattern evoke the rhythms, textures, and mysteries of a people’s experience” (Britannica Articles). The way Bearden layered different materials told a story about the life African-Americans lived and what their culture is all…

I read the book, “The 5th Wave,” written by Rick Yancey. It was published May 7th, 2013. I personally enjoyed the book. Before I read the book, I saw the trailer for the movie coming out and the main character is my bae. I’m excited for the release of the movie. The trailer was pretty hyped, it really caught my attention with all the action. During reading, I enjoyed how there was so much suspense after each chapter, it kept making me go on to the next one. For example, a chapter ended with Cassie bleeding out under a Buick; a silencer was waiting for her to make her move. It was a really intense moment. Some reviews I read thought the first 100 pages were boring. They concluded that because of the flashbacks to Cassie’s life before the invasion,…

Firstly I will analyse “Sunday afternoon”. The colours in the painting are simple and bright, the artist does not blend colours instead he dots pure colours and lets the eyes blend them. This takes a long time to do and a lot of patience, but it eliminates the grey colour you get by over mixing. The mood is quite bright, it captures the emotions you get on a weekend relaxing at a park, but you can see the artist has not given emotion to the people they act more like objects in the scene. I think it reflects a time where the weekends were a time to relax unlike nowadays were people prefer movie theatres and shopping centres over the parks. Pierre painted his artwork to prove his theory that the eyes blended colour they saw. His work very unlike that of Claude Lorraine “Seaport with the Embarkation of St. Ursula” who has a classical approach painting to capture a time, were else Seurats painting reflects his theory that he wanted to prove. The only similarities are the sea and the boats.…

One significant piece of art work that I thought was interesting was a painting that was done by Kerry James Marshall. The title of the painting was called "Better Homes Better Garden", it was made in 1994 (pg. 461). He grew up in the projects of Alabama and Los Angeles. Kelly made these series of paintings to take away any negative feedback that people had about the projects. He was trying to portray an image of piece and tranquility. I specifically like the trade marks that he makes in his paintings, such as the three birds at the top of the painting. He used a lot of bright vibrant colors and objects such as the flowers, birds, and a blue sky. He also used the couple in the painting to show that they were happy…

The composition of the painting is slightly asymmetrical with some dynamic elements. The painting is asymmetrical because the left side is heavier than the right side due to more darker elements on the left such as the dark shades of the water and the terrifying sharks. Also, the boat is slightly tilted towards the left near the sharks, however; the painting tries to be balanced with the dark-skinned man looking towards the right and with the storm in the far right corner. The work is also dynamic because the man’s face is looking towards the right making the observer look to the right as well and spot the flying fish and then go up to see the storm. The man’s legs lead the viewer to the sugarcane and then to the sharks that are overlapping…

R C Sherriff, the author of ‘Journey’s End’ was himself an officer in the East Surrey Regiment. His play is based upon his real-life experiences during the war, mirroring the way he and his comrades lived and fought and in a way re-living some of the war’s fantastic atmosphere of constant fear and incidents. Some very strong, positive characters and a hint of humor make this play successfully dramatic.…

The colour palette within the cover is very warm and mellow as the photograph was taken at sunset/sunrise which is why you can see yellow tones reflecting on the sea and throughout the image as a whole. The rippling in the sea creates a textured foreground which contrasts with the quite plain sky in the background. However in this image your eyes are immediately drawn to the black silhouettes of the horse and rider in the foreground which also links with the black used for the text. By using the same colour for the text it allows the title to stand out from the rest of the design. Also the colour of the text stands out from the background because it’s block colour whereas the photograph is detailed. The overall layout of the piece is used to ‘create one image which encompasses an entire album of story and emotion’.…

    The Tube Train

The next thing I noticed was the rhythm and repetition for example, repetition was used by all of the passengers sitting down side by side are all reading the newspaper. The rhythm comes from the newspaper which also matches and follows the design on the ceiling of the train which has the same pattern of squares from back to front. This leads me to notice the lines drawn by the artist. There are several ninety degree angles all throughout the painting. These angles and the direction of the passengers’ shoes, create an implied line, which help the vanishing line effect. All the straight edges from the newspapers, ceiling tiles, people’s clothes and faces show order and elegance of the people riding the bus. Next I notice the use of complementary colors; most of the picture is done in yellows and dark violets and reds which are all on opposite sides of the color wheel. The shading on the passengers faces show character and emotion at the time of the painting. While the shading and chiaroscuro in the newspapers point out the angle where light is coming from and give the painting a third dimension appeal. The main source of light is coming from the top or the train and it makes it appear night…

Two visual elements are used in this piece. One of those elements is line. Organic lines are used in the hair of the woman to give a natural yet passionate feel to the piece. The curvature of the lines are meant to incite a fluid sense of spontaneity. The contour lines are vague because the piece was made using recycled paper. There is also four intersecting lines surrounding the edge of the piece that frames and give structure to the chaotic hair. This creates a lot of contrast. The second element used in this piece is color. Cool colors are used in this piece to give contrast to the passionate lines. The color scheme of dark and light blue, black, white, and green really give the piece a calming sensation. This better controls the firey passion that is the…

His use of colour is very dark with only a few specks of bright colour with is appealing to the painting as a whole as it is picturing a dark part of the world war. The people in the paint aren’t looking in the same direction bring no focus on a particular part of the painting, showing theirs a story behind each section of the painting. The use of black to define each person as well as to blot out the background makes a dark, mysterious effect that adds to the emotion in the people’s faces of pain and suffering.…

Seeing the red pink colored flowers makes me joyful and reminds me of the flowers I would receive during important days and events in my life. I feel at peace from this painting due to the nature that it submerses you in. I feel the tranquil effect from the mountains in the distance. Lastly, I feel the hope this painting gives me due to the way the sun is coming through the clouds. It reminds me of how I always say there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that not all hope is gone. You just have to make it through the darkness from the cloudy day to find the sun that is on the other side.…
