bitterness.Their wives look on with awe and frustration but both men come together to better one another. This film was directed by George Tillman, Jr. It is influenced by the true story of Master chief petty officer Carl Brashear, the first African American master diver in the United States Navy.
Billy Sunday, the NCO in charge of the diving schoolcould have made Brashear’s adjustment and acceptance easier when he first introduced Brashear to the other sailors by sincerely introducing him in a respectable manner to the other sailors. With him being a commanding officer he would have set the tone for how the other sailors may have decided to treat Brashear. Sunday could have influenced to reaction of the others sailors by informing them that discrimination would not be allowed. Sunday's achieved status gave him the power to be looked upon a very influential person. Brashear began to experience anticipatory socialization, once he was allowed in the Navy he witnessed a rescue by Sunday and it inspired him to want to become a master diver. I believe gender socialization and race lead Brashear's father to give him the talk before he left to get into the Navy bus. Because Brashear was a male he was expected to make something of himself, black men are not expected to succeed or given fair opportunity. Legislation or governmental proclamations change race relations because the government sets a standard for what is and is not acceptable within society with laws being put into place.Withoutlegislativeintervention, weaspeopleshoulddowhatisright amongst all human to treat everyone as equal. This in return will result in a peaceful day to day leaving. If we continue to look down on others we mentally tell ourselves that it is okay to treat other unfairly which is untrue. If you are told it legal for you to do something, it is easier for a person to forgot their morals and treat others fairly. So the fact that is it wrong will no longer matter because legislation says it is or isn't okay. The scenes that illustrate the struggle to implement the new policies with the navy would be the scene when be when
Brashear was told not to show up to test for graduation but he came anyway.
Within this scene Brashear and other sailors in training were given task to assemble a flange underwater using a bag of tools, Sunday sabotaged Brashear's bag and cut it open throwing it into the sea to discourage Brashear not to finish. Brashear nevertheless finishes the assembly and graduates from diving school, earning him a quiet and repressed admiration of Master Chief Sunday and his fellow divers. As a result, Master Chief Sunday is later demoted to senior chief by the commanding officer for standing up for Brashear and allowing him to pass. Things like this make it hard for change but when someone stands up for what is right we can overcome all else. Furthermore, Brashear was able to become the very first African-American Navy Diver.I believe the denial of someone's goal serves as a similar inspiration to other Black American men because no man what to be told he has not able to achieve something especially if he has not be even a chance to prove himself. Inspiration is conceptualized as an appetitive motivational state. Good or bad inspirations are influences and introspective energies that help us will ourselves into better people. Their effect on us are often inexplicable but undeniable as they make us feel things ;good and bad, powerful and captivating- and they can often spice of our …show more content…
lives.
Brashear had many options concerning the Navy's reluctance to accommodate to become a master diver.
Brashear could have easily quit when he faced adversity but he was dead set to achieve a personal goal he had set for himself. Brashear could have also settled as just a Navy diver and allowed the Navy to dictate whether he deserved to be a master diver. The Navy is considered to be a total institution because it isolated the sailors from outside contact at time and you are under the control of your officials. It was known that an African American could not be master diver but Brashear was not concerned because he knew he was capable of performing the task of being a master diver. He believe he was the best and possess the skills to out perform his peers and commanding officer. Some black men are not strong willed so they may be negatively affected by denial of goals they have set. At some point, a black man will feel the world is against him and the goal is not within one's reach. The person will , will be broken and the passion to succeed will dissipated. In order to gain this acceptance Brashear was ready to prove his worth. He proving just how hard it can be to
combat stereotypes .Brashears demonstrates an example of the presence of stereotyping in cultures. The society has set up a structure in which its people do not have a choice as to how they choose to be seen as to others. Brashears also experience role conflict between his career and work life to his family life. He was a absent parent to his son and husband. He was not able to dedicate the same time with his family due to the profession he chose. However Brashear also experienced role strain, he endured a lot of strife within his career path to becoming a master diver.
I enjoyed the acting in this movie by each character it all seemed very believable. They put on a great performance. The way the story was told was amazing, the director was able to give a sense how both of the main characters felt in different point within the movie. The film was well put together keeping all the milestones of growth, to the point, keeping the attention of the viewers. In this film Brashears was able to overcome all the adversity put in front of him. I am not sure if I would have been able to continue to push myself in certain situation as he endured, but I am a strong person and I have always been a self thinker and I motivate myself against all odds and I continue to be the opposite of a statistic set based on my skin color or gender. The character Brashear wanted his father to be proud of him and he remember his father last words and honored them. This is one of the components that continued to push Brashear to succeed. I understand how he felt and how important it was for him to reach the goals he set for himself. Sunday culture could have instilled in him that blacks were not equal to him but the challenge he received from Brashear proved otherwise and Sunday had to somehow respect his abilities. Sunday seemed to be a good hearted person when it came down to it. He made the right decision concerned giving Brashear a pass to graduate, due to him knowing he would be reprimanded for his actions. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is looking for a interesting view into life and the struggle within other cultures and things we face in life.
