One could argue that your cultural background would influence who you are today in the modern world. One could also say that culture background has nothing to do with anything. However, we believe that your culture backroad does not influence on how you see the world. It depends on your views and how you see things. In the short story “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker, two sisters, Dee and Maggie are fighting over a quilt that their grandma made. The quilt that their grandma made helps them realize their american views instead of African American views. Maddie and Dee are both African American but one of them wants to change because she is always hiding and is feeling ashamed about her cultural heritage and how she wants to change the way people see her. Maggie wanted to change her cultural heritage because she kept hiding it which made her ashamed. Dee doesn’t want to change her cultural heritage because she thinks everybody likes it and makes her feel happy. Their grandmother made the quilt to show where they were from and what they are missing because Maggie wanted to change her cultural heritage while Dee didn’t want to change her cultural heritage. Maggie and Dee both knew what would happen if they both changed their cultural heritage followed by Dee not wanting to change her cultural heritage because of how she felt about changing it.
In the short story “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, states that her mother came from a place where in 1949 she lost everything. She told her daughter that “You can be anything in America”, which gives a good reason on why you should find the right person to make everything right for everybody else in the world. When you lose something you lose almost everything you cared about and how you cared for them. While “Ni Kan” was crying she told her that crying isn’t a talent for when you lose something or someone. Ni Kan doesn’t want to lose everything but keep everything she has
when everything is gone in the future. Her teacher said “You look like a Negro Chinese” which made Ni Kan feel like she said that on purpose. Ni Kan feels like she doesn’t belong in this world according to her teacher. Her teacher makes her feel like going back to where she came from and never come back to San Francisco. When Ni Kan didn’t want to go to school her mother wanted to take her there and try to fit in with other people. Ni Kan didn’t want to feel bad about herself but other people like her teacher made her feel embarrassed.
