Racial bias creates barrier between nurse and patient relationship preventing effective and collaborative care of vulnerable excluded minority groups. Nurses need to work collaboratively with carers and families so that the can learn what is culturally normal and abnormal in a patient’s behaviour. In order to minimise the problem nurses need to be informed on how to intervene to reduce the damaging impact of racism and discrimination and tailor interventions to better address the specific needs of ethnic minority groups. There is need to increase effort to promote cultural competency in Mental Health services through maybe mandatory training on cultural competency issues which can also be incorporated in academic and professional mental health training programmes. There is urgent need to better communication that promotes and appreciate cultural differences while at the same time acknowledge the increasing diversity of our society.
Mental health policy makers need to promote awareness of the impact of racial minorities’ status stress and racism induced stress on mental health in order to safeguard against misdiagnosis and provide culturally sensitive services and mental health professionals must develop a diagnostic tool which reflects considerations of the experiences of racism induced
