Cultural Experience Analysis
I never realized how experiencing a different culture would impact my life for the good. Experiencing a different culture made me aware of how lucky I am to live in the United states, how people can come together in times of need, how loving and caring people who are less fortunate than me can be, and how truly blessed I am to live in a safe environment. I am so blessed to have been given the opportunity to go to Guatemala on a church mission trip. That week of my life changed me forever. It all started out very early in the morning. I woke up at 5 o clock to drive to the airport and wait to board the plane. When I got to the airport my whole church group was there, waiting with huge smiles on their face- almost like they knew something beautiful was going to happen that week. After greeting everyone I got my bags …show more content…
I saw a lot of strange faces in the group I was going with, I didn’t feel completely comfortable, but when traveling you have to go out of your comfort zone to witness amazing things. All of a sudden an announcement came on overhead, “Attention everybody boarding the Guatemala flight, the plane is having problems starting up. There will be an hour delay.” I listened to everyone trying to be positive about the situation. My optimism was …show more content…
But it is so worth it. Putting myself in that situation brought so much happiness to my life. I built so many relationships in the Village of Chuluc. I can truly say that I have family in Guatemala. I will continue to go back, there is always more to be learned and there is always something you can do to help out someone else. I believe I didn’t teach those kids anything, but they taught me so much more than I could have ever imagined. Guatemala will always have a place in my heart, and the people there have changed my perspective on traveling. I am so happy I got to experience this

As a child I realized I happen to be Native American. That is to say, I never grasped the concept of what being Native American was, but that is what my parents told me I was. My view on who I was a human being changed that summer in Michigan. It started with a humid day and wind that occasionally blew by to refresh my perspiring body. My grandma put me in a flowing skirt and dress shirt that day because we were going to a place that required dressing for our heritage. Even though I had not had a clue what my heritage was, I did what I was told. We traveled…

Think of what you had for breakfast, then lunch, now dinner. What if out of the three meals a day you only had the chance to have two, if that. What if you're still under the age of 13 and you had to take over the role of one parent, maybe both for the day because they work in the fields or cleaning houses to be able to pay rent and buy food. So you're stuck taking care of babies, cooking, and somehow still managing to finish your schoolwork. This is what life in the small community of Lake Worth, Florida is like. Knowing about this motivated me to get more involved and help the Guatemalan community through service.…

I attended an Atlanta Mar Thoma Indian Church service and a social fellowship honoring Senior citizens. The church service started at 10 am. When I arrived to the parking lot, I introduced myself to a young lady by the same of Sarah who was cordial enough to answer all of my questions concerning the service and invited me to the fellowship later. The service lasted for 3 hours. I noticed their central theme throughout the service was unity and harmony. They also followed a central pattern of call and response. The preacher would make a statement and the congregation would respond by reading the appropriate response on overhead screen. A lot of the recitations included asking God for forgiveness for their sins. They also had prayer and communion.…

Parkwood Nursing home is the residence of approximately 50 clients with varying mental and physical abilities. The front door of the building looks like the door on a house. When entering the front door, you get the feeling of a doctor's office. My friend had to ask for permission to see her son. We waited in the lobby which was nicely decorated in soothing colors of green and brown with plaques of accomplishment of the center and staff. The staff…

I am beyond proud of the person he has become, so to see him all grown up making the decision to leave home brought tears to my eyes.…

    1. The Holocaust unit we learned about in class has impacted my life in many ways. It has changed a lot of my opinions on a variety of different topics and made me realize how horrific the Holocaust actually was. It was not until after the lesson was complete that I totally grasped the severity of the events that took place at the German hand. I was shocked and appalled by the actions and crime I heard about during this dark time in history. I have been enlightened to new things I never thought possible for human beings to do. This lesson is one I will carry with me for the rest of my life.…

Being culturally competent of a student’s culture is essential for school counselors within a diverse population. In order for a school counselor to be culturally competent, it is essential for them to be aware of three major ideas: know yourself, know the student, and know the technique. Within these three competencies there are common themes that are utilized throughout each. Beliefs and attitudes, knowledge, and skills are all indispensable within the context of school counseling. Throughout the evolution of school counseling, these concepts have been consistent with multicultural counseling. However, based on recent research counselors are developing reason to believe that it is also imperative to explore spirituality as one of the competencies. These multicultural counseling competencies as well as spirituality will all be explored within this paper in regards to how school counselors (and myself, as a school counselor in training) can best counsel and work through the diverse issues of their students. The competencies being addressed can be further explored in Operationalization of the Multicultural Counseling Competencies (Arredondo, et al., 1996).…

Meeting people of other cultures has helped me to become a better person. Some people do not know how to meet or become friends with people of other cultures. A lot of people need to learn how to understand the cultures of different people. For example, there are several kinds of people that you could meet, be friends with, and learn a lot from. I have encountered people from some of the Indian tribe cultures; as well as the Mexican, Latino, Irish, Pilipino, Dutch, and Greek cultures.
