My Cultural Heritage Project
My ethnic heritage is very important to me, being of African-American decent my heritage is the most important characteristic about me. Honestly it should not be that way because all people should be considered equal across genders and races however being a black man can sometimes be a distinct characteristic that sets you apart from everyone else. I identify with my culture and I am proud to be a black man, there are many negative stereotypes that other cultures have about black men so I strive not to fall into that category. I can only generate information about my family from my mother’s side because I do not have a relationship with my biological father. I do know that my great-great grand mother and father on my mother’s side are from Laurinburg, North Carolina. My grandmother on my mother’s side moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she had 6 children and my mother was one of those six. My grandmother also had 6 or 7 brothers and sisters and her brother Tom also lives in Philadelphia so I have a large amount of family in the Philadelphia region. As of now I belong to five subcultures that affect my life on a daily basis, the first is that I am Christian, and I believe this is number one because my faith does not always agree with what society or my family and friends may opinions and perceptions. Second is the fact that I am African-American I believe that my race plays one of the most important roles in my life, it is considerably the most influencing factor at times. Third is that I am male, being as though there are only two genders on earth I consider being a male to play a major role however I see women and men as equal so it does not play a major effect on me personally. Fourth is that I am a college student, this is a significant subculture as well because this takes up a majority of my life, and most likely will for the next ten years of my life. Fifth is
