Before moving to Carthage I had essentially no interaction with Hispanic people. I am embarrassed to say I relied on stereotypes to build my opinion. My husband and I moved to Carthage in 2011 after losing our home in the Joplin tornado. We had 3 dogs and nowhere to go, we waited on our home insurance payout and houses were getting snatched up. We were approached by an acquaintance, who had a home in Carthage that was for sale and vacant. We went to Carthage to look at it; I immediately feel in love, built in 1910 and it has history and great features. We have made a home where we are; and have become mutually reliant with our neighbors when they are in need of assistance and vice versa. I love the feeling of belonging here. I hope to be an example of acceptance and progression to other non-Hispanic residents of Carthage who are still accepting the proverbial stereotypes, I too once believed. I hope to encourage positive interaction between the different cultures in Carthage. In Carthage we have recently elected our first Hispanic council member, which is a step in the right direction. I see evolution in the convergence of cultures since we have lived here. I hope to spend the rest of my days in this beautiful home, in this beautifully friendly neighborhood and continue to learn about myself every
