Cultural Stereotypes By Adichie Summary
Many people all around the world are being stereotyped. The Nigerian novelist, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, shows that if a person is repetitively shown only one thing, they become it. She also points out that even though adults can view a certain culture from many different sources, children must listen to their parents and teachers. Adichie's primary culture that she is showing is African culture. Since she is from Nigeria, a country in Africa, she knows plenty about her culture; when she viewed her country from a non-African's point of view, she realized that stereotypes are affecting the way a person thinks about Africa. One of her most important points in the passage is the existence of diversity in the world: urban, rural; rich, poor, middle; diversity in countries. …show more content…
Cultural stereotypes create sympathy rather than empathy because popular pictures show people that cultures are bad, people only hear a little about a culture, and people only hear stories about one culture. Plenty of graphics people portray Africa as a country with cultures that are below our standards, convincing people to feel pity for it. Also, quite a few people do not completely hear the truth, and will misunderstand a culture. People only know about stereotypes about one culture, and they wouldn't be stuck to one culture. Cultural stereotypes create sympathy rather than empathy because graphics show that African culture isn't good, people do not truly realize what is factual, and people only know stereotypes about one

When a person is stereotyped they feel that they are not respected as they are judged because of a stereotype that is connected to their ethnicity or race. The second danger is it makes the idea of human equality seem impossible to understand for most people. If stereotypes and racism continues to exist, the myth that is race will continue to haunt people around the world and will never feel like humanity as one and equal. The third danger is that it puts emphasis on differences. If people continue to focus on stereotypes, they will always see the differences, mostly bad, in people but never the similarities and the good in other people and with that, there can never be a connectedness in different people. Adichie’s roommate had a single story of Adichie, and it was that she was a stereotypical African. Adichie’s roommate asked her how she knew English so well, but Adichie then told her that Nigeria’s official language is English, she also thought Adichie listened to tribal music and didn’t know how to work a stove. Adichie even says that her roommate felt pity for Adichie even though she was well…

Most workers who work in a clothing store or a store in general are being told to follow the minority customers around the store because they believe that all minorities steal which is not true. I am a minority and I do not steal, just because most minority steal does not mean all of them steal. Being woman males think that we cannot do the things that they do and that we should stay home to raise children, cook, and clean. What difference does this make? Steele summarizes the social psychologists “reasoned that it had something to do with their being white... it had to do with a contingency of white identity that comes to bear in situations where natural athletic ability is being evaluated.” In short, white people are aware of the stereotype that they aren’t as naturally athletic, and therefore the pressure of being judged by that ability increases the awareness of fitting in the stereotype. In reaction, these people react worse due to the stress, pressure, and distraction.…

African Americans are better at sports than white people. This is a stereotype. People think that African Americans are better at sports, but is this really true. Think about Chris Paul, LeBron James, Michael Jordan, and Kobe Bryant. You think that those players are the best in the game, but are they. There are very good white players that are legends. Think about Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, John Stockton, and Steve Nash. All of these white legends are very good. Some African Americans are good at sports, not all and there are white players that are very goof if not better than some African Americans. Stereotypes have a big impact on society and we should just ignore them so that our society will be a better one.…

In the film world, Native American Indians have evolved from stereotypical roles such as that of a noble savage to that of the "new hero" into more diverse and complex roles such as Magua in James Fenimore Coopers' 1826 novel The Last of the Mohicans and Scar in The Searchers (1956). Native Americans have challenged these stereotypes by progressing into "what used to be ethnic restricted roles" ( Kubik, 2014). The term noble savage was given to primarily Native American Indian men who were untouched by civilized corruption. These weren't the only racist stereotype terms. used to refer to Native Americans. Some of the terms used were Chief; most who carry that title were never actual chiefs, this was just a common name whites gave to Indian…

Stereotypes. Stereotypes play a major and huge role today in society negatively and positively. Stereotypes can form truthful and untruthful results that can mentally, emotionally and physically destroy a person, race or culture which we see today. Stereotype is a fixed over generalized belief about a particular group or class of people (Meclod). I chose to write on the topic stereotype because in society today we as humans stereotype one another all the time and do not realize it. Research have found that stereotype exist of different races, cultures, or ethic groups (Meclod). Today our world is so based off what the next person thinks and what they will say and do if something is not done a certain way and it bothers me. Upon searching for Native American stereotype images, I realized that nearly every image I found online, I had already seen. This, was interesting to me because it shows how fully assimilated Native American stereotypes are into our culture and into the way I was raised as an all American white female. Of the three images that I found, two of them were used for advertisement mascots and the other was used as a Disney character that portrayed an Americanized version of an “Indian princess”. These images are proof that our society has used stereotypes of Native American people for their own benefit by creating “picture perfect” stories of the Native American…
