culture and language
Can language be used as a political instrument?
Language is a system of signs and meanings that usually shared by a community of people. There is no doubt that language is very important and necessary in the society. Language offers people the means for interaction and to depict ‘people, places and things’. (Butt and David, 1986) Edward Sapir (1884–1939),an American linguist and anthropologist, was the first one who proposed the idea that the power of language can influence culture and thinkings of people. The Sapir–Whorf hypothesis stated that the different culture conceptions and classification contained by different languages affect the acknowledges toward the whole world and lives of the language users. In the other words, it means that the users of different languages will have different ways of thinking and produce different modes of behaviors just because of the differences in language.(Penn, 1972) As time going by, there is no doubt that language has effects on shaping the way we see and experience the world and in influencing our subsequent behaviors (Hasan, 1996). Politics is a very complex conception and it is hard to define it . In the following essay, I will talk about the reasons why language is a political instrument and what should be paid attention to when talking about the relationships between language and politics.
When it comes to the reasons why language is regarded as a political instrument or a political tool, there are many aspects needed to be considered. Cohen makes a good case against the hypocritical reasons that the British gave for their treatment of the Native Americans. First, the British did not value the civilization they thrust themselves upon even though it had been successful for thousands of years. The "new world" was not technologically advanced like many European inventions such as the globe, and the black powder weapon; which gave the British the idea that their superior knowledge made them worth more as human beings. Submission to their rule was only alternative for Native Americans. Failing that, then force and treachery were a way to handle the "savages".…

Professional counselors have the obligation to ensure quality and effective counseling toward clients. All the while, counselors are committed to the ethical guidelines that are established to avoid legal, professional malpractice and competent issues. Some of those guidelines consider dual relationships and professional boundaries. Counselors are not to engage in dual relationships with clients, supervisors, and coworkers, and also should be cautioned to prevent situations that may cause ethical boundary violations. However, after a client has completed treatment and has been terminated for some time, some of those rules tend to change. Therefore, counselors should be able to think logically while having criteria to make ethical decisions.…

Culture can be basically defined as a pattern of learned behavior and ideas acquired by people as members of society. Culture was created in order to accommodate human beings in different society and establish their identity. Culture is not accustomed to one specific characteristic. It has a multiple dimensions. The way we talk, dress, eat, sleep, work and our knowledge and skills can be accustomed to our culture. These human manners are not uniform all over the place so, they change over time and space. Thus anthropologists have distinguished different cultural traditions different from one another with very thin line between them. And in the course people share, burrow and practice culture from one other. Cultural practices have become inevitable part of human being because we have become biologically dependent on culture for our own survival. For example human beings are not born with some natural instincts. In fact we depend upon the support, nurture and culture of our surroundings to survive. And by learning the cultural practice of the place we live in, we become mature enough to make rational decision and act for our own survival.…

Socialization can be defined as the process by which people learn to become members of a society (Tepperman & Curtis, 2011, p.58). Thus, the socialization process of an individual starts from birth and continues throughout life. The period of socialization helps an individual to develop feelings, perceptions, learn the basics of social interaction and also learn to recognize and respond socially to parents and other important people in their lives (Tepperman & Curtis, 2011, p.58). According to Tepperman and Curtis (2011), “Socialization is accomplished by many different variables; including ethnicity, family structure, gender, environment and birth order” (p.58). Socialization perpetuates culture so therefore individuals are affected by socialization and culture in one way or the other. By definition, culture is a set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization, or group (MacNeill, 2012). It is the key to understanding how we relate to each other. There are different types of culture around the world, for example, American culture, Chinese culture, and African culture. Tepperman and Curtis (2011) noted that “Culture is different between places and at different times” (p. 32). Culture consists of a set of principles and traditions which is passed on from one generation to another. Socialization teaches cultural values and norms which provides the guidelines for our everyday life. It is therefore inevitable that socialization influences what we do as humans. This paper will argue that the effects of the principal agents of socialization have led to the continuity of culture. This paper will then discuss some of the attributes of the cultural realms that are connected with the process of socialization. Finally, the essay will conclude with a discussion on the effects of socialization outcomes.…

The words 'culture ' and 'civilization ' have been often used synonymously, though they have different meanings. By definition, culture is the tastes in art and manners that are favored by a social group. On the other hand, 'Civilization ' means the betterment of ways of living, making nature bend to fulfill the needs of humankind. It includes also organizing societies into politically well-defined groups working collectively for improved conditions of life in matters of food, dress, communication, and so on. However, when talking about culture and civilization, the topic of migration and identity comes in the discussion. During the migration process, the individual may become more or less attached to his or her native culture, depending on the experience which he or she experiences. In exploring the topic of culture and civilization in the works of the authors Leslie Silko, Judith Cofer, Amartya Send and Edward Said, the different perceptions of home and host societies by these authors which are mentioned in their writings, tackle issues such as inter-cultural perceptions, personal identity and dedication to tradition.…
