Culture Awareness Project
The Chinese culture teaches one that health is being in a state of spiritual and physical harmony with nature. If you’re healthy then your body is in a state of balance, but when you are ill you are unbalanced. They view that someone’s body does not belong to them but also a gift from their parents and so on. The balance between yin and yang is very important to them. If yang is overpowering, cold remedies are used and if yin is overpowering then hot remedies are used.
Major health concepts are yin and yang and that the reason you are ill is that one or the other is either overpowering or too little.
They believe that the main influences for someone getting sick is that one or multiple of the six “evils” have arisen from outside the body. They are wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness, and summer heat.

Fever, headache, sweating, abdominal pain, bloating and constipation. Strong and rapid pulse. Red Tongue body with yellow coat, this is pattern of internal, excess, heat. purging method can be used in this example to clear heat. When one is cold, they use heat methods to “release the surface” and are to drink hot water and cover with blankets when sleeping.

Their response to pain is to refuse and help that is offered to them because they believe the other persons needs are more important than their own

Their beliefs surrounding birth are that they should not use sharp objects on the bed because it can result with the baby being born with a cleft palate or lip. Do not touch anything with adhesive or glu because it will give birth marks to the baby, do not criticize people or your baby will act and look like the person you criticized. Spouse is not to be present during delivery, crying out will attract evil spirits so it is recommended to be silent.

They believe that if someone is ill and they are in a room with the number “4” in it, it will bring death, and for their feet not be facing the door because the dead are carried out feet first. Respect is paid to elders,

The Chinese culture is more in touch with the energy of the earth, yin and yang and the importance of meditation. The diet is health oriented; consisting of grains, seafood, and vegetables. The use of spices and herbs such as ginger, sassafras and many more are used to help with pains and illness. In comparison to the Chinese art of meditation and herbs, the African-American community places strong emphasis of the power of prayer, a strong belief that a higher power will heal.…

Historically, people have sought to understand the world around them and how they as people exist within that world. Through the desire for understanding of ourselves and our bodies we as people seek to label and quantify bodily functions, behaviors, and illness. People first tried to explain illness in terms of a Biblical context – good verses evil. Therefore, illness was seen as a punishment for some overt or covert evil within the person. Slowly theological explanations gave way to value judgments on those in lower socioeconomic classes and a choice of unhealthy living (Weitz, 101-102). As scientific progress moved forward two models of illness became more apparent: the medical model and the sociological model. This gave way to understanding…

Many of the problems now and in time have been the product of someone stereotyping someone else for being “different” than they are. It can be based off the pigmentation of one’s skin, the religious differences between people, but more often than not, it is because of the class a person falls into economically. Class is a system that distinguishes people by the amount of money a person makes, or that is what class is supposed to be. We often see the upper-class portrayed as educated, clean, and powerful people as opposed to the lower-class who are seen as dirty, lazy, and powerless individuals. The way the media stereotypes the economic classes makes a class seem like a culture instead of an economic standing. In many cases, us individuals allow those stereotypes to become who we are.…

Currently, most models of illness assume a causal relation between disease and illness—the perceived condition of poor health felt by an individual. Cultural health beliefs and models of illness help determine the perceived importance of symptoms and the subsequent use of medical resources.4 The assumption that a specific disease underlies all illness has led to medicalization of commonly experienced anomalous sensations and often disbelief of patients who present with illness without any demonstrable disease process.…

It is true that many individuals assume that illness is a purely biological condition, definable by objectively measured biological traits. However, definitions of illness vary considerably over time and across social groups. In contrast, other individuals and literature argue that illness is a moral category and a social construction. The objective, biological perspective of illness focuses on the physiology or structure/functioning of the human body. The biological standpoint of illness is an objective reality. Scientific research and evidence determines whether or not we have a new illness. The medical model of illness begins with the assumption that illness is an objective label given to anything that deviates from normal biological functioning. It also claims that there is no moral element or political bias in labeling a condition or behavior as an element. Medical professionals are able to determine what is considered an illness and favor this model because there is a curative approach.…

Alongside with our lives are tensions between two different poles of entities - a cause-effect relationship. That is why Aristotelian ethical doctrine suggests the need for moderation is the greatest good for man. During some time about 1000 years ago in the Song Dynasty, a man named Chen Yan classified the causes of disease into three different categories (Gao 31). Chinese medicine does not believe that bacteria and viruses are the cause of disease. Instead, it talks about influences that cause "disharmony" in Yin and Yang, the Essential Substances, the Organ System, the Channels, and the Five Phases (Cohen 37). "The Six Pernicious Influences-Heat, Cold, Wind, Dampness, Dryness and Summer Heat-are external climatic forces that can invade the body and create disharmony in the mind/body/spirit" (Cohen 37). With symptoms relating to heat, you can either have an excess of heat or a deficiency of it. Excess heat usually lasts for short periods of time and has symptoms such as high fevers, irritability and restlessness, thirst, little or no sweat or urine, and a flushed face. Heat rises in nature, as it also does in your body. That is why the upper areas of your body are the ones that suffer from excess heat. If you have an insufficient amount of heat you might suffer from hot hands and feet, fevers that occur in the afternoon, sore throat, inability to fall asleep, and…

Yin and Yang are the dynamic forces that help keep life in balance. The symbol of the Yin and Yang is two teardrop shaped halves that are black and white and together they make a circle. Inside each teardrop shape is a smaller circle of the opposite color. The meaning of the Yin and Yang is that the forces depend on each other in order to keep balance. Too much of Yang or Yin would result in an unbalanced life. It can also be interpreted as there is always some light in darkness and vice versa. Not only did the people of China have their own way of interpreting life so did the…
