Sociologists and cultural critics still argue about the effects of media violence. I don’t think anybody really knows the answer so why even bring it up in the first place? It is an important component in the craft of screen writing. In this age of computer animation and special effects, it has become as mundane as ‘coffee and donuts’. Believe me, if they ever pull it all out, you’ll sit up on your sofa one day after your favorite show, or leave the movies after the world was saved and wonder what you…

Violent video games, violent music lyrics, movies, and cartoons cater to young, impressionable minds and implant value systems which we would consider quite inappropriate in them. Some of these societal influences are the ones that shape a child’s behavior. Insensitivity to the value of life, to ethics, to ethical practices is held in high esteem by the media we encounter every single day of our lives. This passes on to children and invariably they end up believing in things that can lead them to get themselves involved in anti-social activities. The protagonist in a movie might kill a villain and harp about this as a great achievement. Here the value of life is understated and not given due importance. Minor, everyday things like these build up, starting small but growing into something quit big and sinister.…

Furthermore death creates numb kids and has the potential to make them violent criminals as well. Anne Beatty’s effective ethos brings attention to the violence…

It is not always easy to right about unpopular topics, especially ones that go against not just the grain, but the majority of a nation. There are few authors who have been successful about writing from behind the walls of oppression and minority inequalities due to the lack of support they get from the overwhelming public. While many others feared the opposition, James Baldwin embraced it with open arms. His writings openly challenged the way people, specifically African Americans, were treated. Raised in Harlem and being a black homosexual man, Baldwin was all too aware of the social injustice and hatred toward minorities. In fact he even left America in 1948 for Paris, to escape the “murderous bitterness that was eating the life around him”…

Critics of the rise of violence on television today decry the images of murder, rape, abject violence, and even torture to which we are exposed. They reason that as we are subjected to more and more violent images we will necessarily become desensitized to them and even accepting of their place in our society. What then would these modern day critics think of the piles of corpses, body parts, and violent assaults on the human form that littered 16th century English stages performing William Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus? Everything old is new again. The trope of violence to convey a message is not a recent invention. It is as old as the problems of society it means to criticize. And whether our frame is early Rome, renaissance England, or post 9/11 America the same problems of political unity, factions, revenge, and abject cruelty persist. In Titus, Shakespeare means for the graphic violence not to offend his crowds but to remind them that challenges to peaceful and prosperous societies will always persist if left unattended.…
