Curly Hair
Like most things, there is a way to classify what type of hair you have. The hair type is made up of a number and a letter. Any type of hair that starts with a two is wavy. Any type of hair that starts with a four is coiled. Of course type three is curly. There are three subdivisions of curly hair; a, b, and c. Type 3a is called Curly Twirly. Curly Twirly looks like a loopy S. It’s most affected by the climate. Some celebrities that have this hair type are Shakira, Debra Messing, and AnnaLynne McCord. Type 3b is also known as Curly Spirally. Curly Spirally ranges from bouncy ringlets to tight corkscrews. The circumference is one of a sharpie. Its main problem is that it isn’t shiny. A couple of celebrities that have been gifted with this hair type are Kerri Russel, Bernadette Peters, and Julianne Margulies. The last hair type in the curly hair category is 3c, Curly Coily. This hair type looks like tight corkscrews. The circumference of each curl is one of a pencil or piece of straw. The celebrities that have this hair type are Rachel True, Cree Summer, and Tracee Ellis Ross. In addition to the fact that there are multiple wave patterns, there are several different hair strand textures. The different textures are fine, medium, and coarse. You can easily tell what type of texture your hair is if you compare a strand of it to a piece of thread. If your hair is thinner than the thread, you have fine hair. If your hair is the same size as the thread, it’s medium. If your hair is thicker than the thread, you have coarse hair. With each strand type there are benefits and disadvantages. Fine hair has the least amount of protein, doesn’t hold curl well, and is prone to breakage and dryness. The advantages of fine hair are that its easier to straighten, less product is needed, and its more flexible. Medium hair has more protein than fine hair yet less than coarse. It also is more pliable than coarse, but not as pliable as fine. Coarse hair holds curl well and is less

In the Outsiders, by S.E Hinton, Ponyboy shows that he doesn’t want his hair cut. He says that “It was my pride” and shows clear dislike to the idea of cutting his hair. The reason he is like that is that greasers are known for their hair, and it makes them feel like they belong. Ponyboy’s is very special to him and says that it makes him look “tuff.” When his hair is cut and bleached, he looks in the mirror and sees what he looks like. Ponyboy continues to say that he looks “like a blasted pansy.” Greasers are known for their hair and if they lose that, they don’t feel like they fit in or belong. Ponyboy describes his new look as “being in a Halloween costume we can’t get out of.” It goes to show that even a haircut can change somebody’s appearance…

To start with, I will provide you with some knowledge about the structure of hair. Hair is made up of two basic parts: The follicle, which is the actively growing root or base of a hair containing DNA and living cells, and the shaft, which is a strand of hair compose of a protein called keratin. The shaft is made up of the medulla (the central core of a hair fiber), the cortex (the region of a hair located outside of the medulla containing granules of pigment), and the cuticle (the tough outer covering of a hair composed of overlapping scales). The medulla is different from person to person. Some are continuous, some are fragmented, some aren’t there at all, and some are even doubled. There are also different types of cuticles, including imbricate, which is what humans have, coronal, which is what rodents have, and spinous, which is what animals such as cats have. With a macroscopic view of hair you can see differences in color, length, and where it is curly, wavy, or straight, but that only scratches the surface of what you can see on hair. With a microscopic view you can see the medullary index (the ratio of diameter of the medulla to the diameter of the hair), cuticle type, cortex color, diameter of the hair, and much more.…
