Curriculum Resource Kit: Rocks

Rocks are everywhere, they cover the whole earth. It is the foundation of the surface we live in. So, we basically live on rocks. They can be a part of a 5000 old year old ancient pyramid to the cement we walk on under our feet as we take a stroll on the street or in the park. When I started collecting rocks as a hobby a couple years ago, I found that there are many different types of rocks. Just not only the shape, texture, colour and size, but also where the rock originates from. The three different types of rocks are igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Igneous rocks are the rocks that are formed by cooled lava. Sedimentary rocks are made up of grains of sand, mud and pebbles compressed and formed after many years later. Metamorphic rocks are changed rocks under heat and pressure.

The rocks I enjoy collecting are the rough white igneous rocks with specks of silver shine in it. My husband likes to collect a nice flat, round rock that sits in his hand. My older daughter enjoys collecting rocks that are white and have a water-smoothed surface; she believes that when she rubs it, her troubles will go away. My younger daughter likes wishing rocks, it also called quartz veins. The rocks have a stripe running all the way around. Some people believe that if you trace the line with your finger around and throw it after you have made a wish, the wish will come true. But she never seems to want to throw the rock

Extrusive rocks are also called volcanic rocks and extrusive rocks are formed on the earth’s surface. Extrusive rocks also form from magma, but a form of lava. Magma flows onto the earth’s surface by an eruption by a volcano. When the magma hits the earth’s surface, the magma turns into lava. Extrusive rocks are formed by lava, and the lava will harden quickly and crystallize quickly, either by hot spots or on the earth’s surface. Igneous rocks are considered felsic, intermediate, mafic, and ultramafic. Felsic rocks are high in silica, and usually light colored, and an extrusive rock, which is felsic, is rhyolite. Intermediate rocks are…

Precambrian rocks have three different types of rocks, sedimentary, igneous, and primarily metamorphic in the origin and the majority of the rocks are buried beneath younger rocks. However, these Precambrian rocks have exposed surfaces in the Great Lakes area as well as the St. Francois Mountains located in the southeastern area of Missouri. Granite and rhyolite are what largely make up the St. Francois Mountains and they also underlie a great deal of the Mississippi River Valley.…

Most rock forming minerals are silicates because of the abundance of the two elements oxygen and silicon in the crust and mantle, which make up about 90% of the earth’s crust. Not all nonsilicate minerals groups make sense chemically, for instance a nonsilicate would be granite, which is made up of partly quartz, which is in fact a silicate. The non-silicate mineral groups collectively…
