Curriculum Resource Kit: Rocks
Rocks are everywhere, they cover the whole earth. It is the foundation of the surface we live in. So, we basically live on rocks. They can be a part of a 5000 old year old ancient pyramid to the cement we walk on under our feet as we take a stroll on the street or in the park. When I started collecting rocks as a hobby a couple years ago, I found that there are many different types of rocks. Just not only the shape, texture, colour and size, but also where the rock originates from. The three different types of rocks are igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Igneous rocks are the rocks that are formed by cooled lava. Sedimentary rocks are made up of grains of sand, mud and pebbles compressed and formed after many years later. Sometimes when I come across a rock and I don’t know what it is, I feel the texture.
The rocks I enjoy collecting are the rough white igneous rocks with specks of silver shine in it. My husband likes to collect a nice flat, round rock that sits in his hand. My older daughter enjoys collecting rocks that are white and have a water-smoothed surface; she believes that when she rubs it, her troubles will go away. My younger daughter likes wishing rocks, it also called quartz veins. The rocks have a stripe running all the way around. Some people believe that if you trace the line with your finger around and throw it after you have made a wish, the wish will come true. But she never seems to want to throw the rock
away.
Rock collecting is fun; the best thing about it is that you can do it anywhere. We can encourage children to look around the environment for interesting rocks. Or perhaps if you pick up some rocks and look at them carefully, you will find something interesting. Whether if it’s the texture, colour or shape. So start a collection of your favourite rocks or just a rock for yourself because everyone needs a rock. And find that special rock and keep it for as long as you can. In the preschool centre, I would like to set up my rock collection on the table to let children explore, making patterns (e.g. big, medium, small, big, medium, small.) Or to have an up close look at the different shape, texture, and sort them by how they feel/look in the sectioned box or sand box. Such as colour, shapes, texture and sizes. Or use some books for story telling. Lately, I decided to make a special triangular pyramid shaped rock out of felt, to allow the children to have a better and different sensory experience. The filling includes polyurethane beads. What made it so special was that it is shaped like triangular pyramid, it is soft and when you rub and squeeze it, you can feel little pebbles inside the felt rock.
