Cyrus Conquest Of The Babylonians: An Analysis
Cyrus’ conquest of the Babylonians affected the Jews in exile. Cyrus announced to all that God had bestowed him the authority to allow all exiles to return to their homes, if they desired (Tullock & McEntire, 2012). This authority also provided for the rebuilding of the Temple and shrines (Tullock & McEntire, 2012). Financial assistance would be available for the purpose of the rebuilding process (Tullock & McEntire, 2012). Cyrus renewed and restored the practices and strategies of the previous kings of the land (Tullock & McEntire, 2012).

While both the Egyptian and Babylonian time periods certainly influenced future mathematics, it seems to be Babylon that had the most to offer. Egypt achieved many feats that required skill in mathematics, but it isn't completely clear how they came about these as their use of papyrus meant much information did not survive. This doesn't mean that they didn't influence the societies and people that came after or from them. It is simply that because of the limited information about their mathematic techniques, we do not have a complete understanding of just how much influence they had. According to Smith, the Egyptians overcame problems of surveying in order to keep accurate records of the Nile's level (p. 43), solved linear equations (p. 48), and had 12 hour divisions of the day (p. 50). They also erected pyramids with very accurate slopes that surely required some mathematical skill, but their process is something scientists can only speculate about.…

Edwin Long was born in 1829 in the city of Bath, which is in the South West of England, and died at the age of 62 in Hampstead, London. His famous painting, The Babylonian Marriage Market (1875) is another piece that not only demonstrates Western superiority, but also reflects women’s oppression within the Victorian society. As the title of the work suggests, the painting shows the Babylonian marriage system, which is based on a process of auctions. Long’s composition demonstrates, a “distribution of beauty and ugliness among the marriageable women.” William Rossetti observed that the picture showed a combination of “antique fact” and “modern innuendo,” this last term might derived from the fact that London was known as the “modern Babylon”…

In history, rulers are remembered by the land that they conquer and how they change it to their ways. Many of these conquerors reigned across different times, but two of the more famous one that rose up fairly close together are Cyrus the Great and Alexander the Great. These men came at two different times, but they are remembered for similar reasons. From Cyrus the Great expanding an empire to Alexander the Great spreading a culture both accomplished many daring and courageous acts. The letter of Cyrus the Great concerning the Jews was a letter Cyrus wrote stating his plans of helping the Jews return to their kingdom and promising them to rebuild their temple in Jerusalem. He kept his word and made sure that the temple was built and if anyone opposed he threatened them with death. Cyrus’s strategy of conquest was unique because it allowed people that he conquered to have a sense of freedom, even though they were being ruled over. They didn’t have to confirm to Persian culture and religion by force. Rather he allowed the different groups that he conquered like the Babylonians, Egyptians, and others to continue their own religious practices as long as they pay taxes, and gave their sons to be soldiers to the Persian army.…
