Ever since it was first founded in 2006, DJI (a Chinese technology company) has been committed to developing highly sophisticated products in the personal aerial drone space. Their most popular drone, the Phantom (first released in January 7th, 2013) has seen multiple evolutionary iterations over the years. This report will serve as a case study on the drone’s latest iteration released on April 8th, 2015: The DJI Phantom 3.
1.1 Objectives
To explore the history of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as a precursor to the DJI Phantom 3.
To explain the technology of the Phantom 3 with regards to its mechanical design, system components, remote control systems and the evolution of the platform.
To examine the purpose and possible …show more content…
It is a cinema-quality camera which can take a UHD video. Since the frames are 30 per second with 4096 x 2160 resolutuin, each frame can be a high-quality photo. It changes the traditional trend to digital trend. Any individual frame is approximately 12MP (megapixel), adequate for fine art printing. The increased resolution comes with a price: the data is four-times heavier than HD. So the entire pipeline must be robust to ingest, move, manipulate, and store four-times more data. “The Phantom 3 allows aerial photographers and videographers to get the image quality they need, but at a price they can afford. With its 4k resolution, it opens the door for multirotor pilots to truly capture the essence of a landscape and display it in a way that accurately conveys the true beauty.” - Bill Schiffner (2014) [28]
5.1 Impact to drone pilots In May of 2015, a DJI Phantom 3 accessory survey was done by QuadHanger [28]. They got 95 responses from enthusiastic drone pilots.
It show the 260$ difference between the models is well-justified by the better camera. The 4K camera of Phantom 3 was very attractive to the drone pilots. It brings a big surprise to the drone lovers that a drone can be a movie-level camera and take the aerial video.
