Gatsby wasn't born with money he was born an average man, but he fell for a weathly women who was actually born with money, this means she actually came from a wealthy family. However, she wanted more but Gatsby wasn't able to do so at the moment. Therefore Gatsby spent his whole life trying to become a wealthy man.
