Dance Performance Review
erformance. This performance was held at the Victoria J. Mastrobruno Theater. The performers in the show were all BFA dance majors at Mason Gross School of the Arts and the choreographers included faculty and guest choreographers. The dancers performed unique pieces that captivated the audience and truly illustrated the array of talent. Each piece used a plethora of ideas and created artistic environments to showcase an outcome, to the semester long projects. In addition to the choreographers and dancers creating the overall product, the lighting played a huge role. The lighting in this show help to sculpt the dancers and create designs to produce a bigger picture.
The first piece was “A solo in nine parts”, which was choreographed by Jessica Lang. This piece had eight dancers. The female dancers were wearing long blue dresses, while the men wore blue tops and grey pants. This piece was a ballet based and incorporated a lot of traveling across the space. There were also many spatial

This piece had six dancers, who were all female. The costumes in this piece were blue and brown. The overall feeling for his piece was mysterious and dark. To further show this the lighting side light used warm colors, for example browns and yellows. The dancers also had a strong focus that was out and up and to show this, there was a lot of clear wash of light. This top light highlighted the dancers face. I also noticed the use of angles and directions of the lights. Some of the lights hit the dancers diagonally. This added length to the dancer’s bodies and allowed for the movement to be seen in its entirety. For this piece I enjoyed the balance between darker warm light and the brighter clear light. It created a specific environment for the piece that could not have been seen without the lights. I enjoyed being able to see how the light can change and support the changes in a

In Obarnazeks piece “Digital Moves”, the creative team incorporates heavy use of Lighting. Choreographed to be sight specific, the lighting reacts and responds to the dancer’s movements, resembling a live art piece. Gideon Obarnazek uses a lighting engineer to cleverly design a rig of lighting that creates atmosphere and symbolism. An example of this can be seen when the performers are seen centre stage, the bodies lying still on the floor as the lighting reflects bars, as if to represent a prison cell or claustrophobic space. The dancers perform within the suggested “prison cell” projection, suspended in the image. Due to the sight specific choreography, as the dancers interact and move, they choreograph the light, bringing it life and giving it purpose. This becomes a constant theme throughout the work, the continuation of dark and angsts lighting evokes fear and worry. The stage itself acts as a non-movement component in this production. The stage tilts up, providing and creating a new angle for audience members to witness, and performers to dance on. Stating that “flat is boring”, Obarnazek presents a new weightlessness to dance, breaking down the “four wall stereotype” and opening up the stage for 360 degree viewing, the constant changing matter of the stage could represent unstableness and risk with purpose to show “another level” of emotion. Music is also a non-movement component that helps to evoke…

What i first noticed when I first entered the performance center was a duet dancing slowly. The girls’ costume was a purple color and she was wearing a tank top and a flowy skirt. The male dancer was wearing simple purple pants that were obviously moveable. I particularly noticed the lighting that was on the floor. On the floor seemed to be a projection of snowflakes and cool blue lighting on top.…

The Rite of Spring was choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky, a Russian dancer and choreographer. He joined The Imperial School of Ballet in 1900 and was later the lead dancer of the Ballet Russes. He eventually choreographed many works, one of them being Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) in 1913. He “exceeded the limits of traditional ballet” and the Rite was an example of this. In 1919 he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and spent the rest of his life in and out of hospitals until he died in London on April 8, 1950. The Rite of Spring was performed by Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes on May 29th, 1913 at the Theatre des Champs Elysees in Paris. It was later remade by the Joffrey Ballet in Los Angeles on September 30, 1987. Igor Stravinsky was the composer for The Rite of Spring. In his works for the Rite there was a significant basis of Russian and Lithuanian folk music. His music has influenced many of the 20th century composers and the idea that the Rite portrayed was inspired by Pagan Russia. The Rite of Spring became one of the first pieces of work that led to modern dance.…

The dull, blank wall behind the woman draws your eye to the more colorful woman and her work, not distracting you in the least. Even though her dress is bright in contrast to the blue of the fabric and cushion near her, it is still dull in comparison to brighter works of the time. There are some brighter colors in the work, such as the red thread on the cushion and the woman's dress. However, they fit well with the other colors in the work, not contrasting too greatly, thus not drawing too much attention to themselves. This creates a lack of vibrancy, energy or movement in the…

For instance, in the scene where Cheech goes to the Lazy River, the lighting effects made the audience feel as if they were looking into the murky water. The cool colors of blue and gray gave the scene a dark and eerie mood. Lighting was also effective during the night club scenes in that it provided a feeling of temptation and lust. I think that it is important to note that the backdrop for this musical was very simple; therefore, the lighting is what made each scene realistic. In response to costumes, they were very 1929 New York like with some modern style.…

The contrast in this painting is used to draw one’s attention to the center of the photo, where the light is illuminating the objects around it. The type of balance in this painting is radial, since the candle light radiates outward from the center in a circular fashion. The emphasis of the candle light makes it unavoidable to the viewer. Also, the woman’s deep gaze into the light draws attention to it as well. The space around the focal point allows the viewer to focus only on that, because it is plain with no distractions.…

As a surprise for my birthday during the hustle and bustle of the State Fair at Fair Park, I had the pleasure of seeing West Side Story presented by the Dallas Summer Musicals on October 11, 2011. West Side Story is a musical that takes place in New York City during the mid 1950s. An adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the musical shows the rivalry between two teenage street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. The Jets are a white working class group while the Sharks are from Puerto Rico. The lead male, Tony is a Jet and he falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo who is the leader of the Sharks. The story follows the obstacles that they must face in order to be together, and also how the two different cultures of the time clashed.…

The Great Depression originated in the United States with the stock market crash in 1929. The depression was the biggest economic fall in American’s history. This crash stretched throughout the globe and affected the rich as well as the poor. During the great depression, the unemployment was high, the wages were low, lines stretched around the city for food, and children had to stop school to work for money. Zishan Ugurlu, the director of “Marathon Dancing: Letters To Wall Street In The Era of Wonderful Nonsense” shows the history of the marathon dancing in the 1920s and 1930s. The performance is around two hours long, and without a rest time. The dance is held in Loree Dance Theater on Douglass Campus. The theater is very small, which not able to fit lots of people at the same time. There are…

The focus of the short story “Dancer” by Vickie Sears is the positive progression of the main character, Clarissa, a foster child who gains a sense of her cultural identity as a Native. In the beginning of the story, she is introduced as a child with next to nothing and is portrayed to have psychopathic traits. Towards the end of the story, there are positive changes in her character. The main factor that led to Clarissa’s progression was her developing a strong interest in the powwow that led her to gain a sense of being a part of a family, knowledge about the community, and a better understanding of her history and culture.…

This program is important to me because I am interested in taking business courses and improving my dancing so that I may one day have a dance studio of my own. After high school I plan on going to college to pursue a career in dance and business. Dancing has been the biggest hobby of mine ever since I was three years old. My passion for dance has inspired me to try out for numerous things. First thing I have felt in love with was liturgical dancing which is usually seen in various churches. This is a style of dance that I have been doing for about eleven years. Within those eleven years I have choreographed eight of the dances I have performed as a solo and as a group. Cheerleading is another thing that had caught my interest. I have been a part of a cheerleading team…

Barbara Streisand's “The Music…The Mem’ries…The Magic! Tour” marked the last series of concerts legendary singer, filmmaker, and Broadway star Barbra Streisand would perform throughout her career. The last stop of the tour, took place in the American Airlines Arena. Despite the fact that it is a basketball venue and meant for large crowds of rowdy fans, the the concert maintained a very soothing atmosphere. This atmosphere is attributed to the stage set up. The stage had been pushed forward and took up a lot of space. This led to the illusion that the space was a lot smaller than it really was. The stage had a barstool in the center and a couch and chair at the other ends, and these props served as a place for Barbra Streisand to rest between…
